Re: Don't get pricked (Porcupine prefight)

I have a "Porcupine".

Its lyrical approach will be mildly controversial.

Its musical approach will be YMMV.

There will be no doubt it is well made, but it won't be for everyone. Consider yourself warned.

Re: Acting on Song Fight feedback

You asked a lot of interesting questions, and I have commentary on them. So here's some responses from my POV, for whatever it's worth . I think I generally try to phrase my own reviews / comments in a kind of "I liked these things but not these things I find that kind of thing useful, because I con...

Re: Acting on Song Fight feedback

For me, feedback: Confirms intention ("Did the listeners get X aspect of my song?") Answers questions ("Is my intro too long?") Reveals the unknown ("Oh, I didn't even think of that!") It doesn't usually provide any specific instruction tho. Tips and tricks do that, but they're never part of feedbac...

Ha, shows how knowing just a little about someone's process causes one to make incorrect assumptions.

Third Cat I like the delay on the vocal. Chorus is too short. You get into a groove on the second verse, and the performance is like 2x better than the first verse/chorus. Short as it is, I really like that chorus melody and arrangement a lot. So I wish there was more of it. Another couplet would h...

Re: Songwriting competition judging mechanisms

In the case of a Nur Ein situation, though this topic wasn’t about that originally, would the goal be to receive not only a more objective critique from the judges, but for that objectivity to carry weight in the outcome? Tough to achieve since so many measures of songcraft are inherently subjective...

What would you ask a songwriter about a song?

If you could ask multiple Song Fighters to all answer the same question about any of their Song Fight entries-- their choice-- what question would you ask? Some examples: What's the structure of the song? What did you use to record the song? What was your approach to the title? How satisfied are you...

I'm on a Mid-2012 MacBook Pro, so I am likewise interested in any performance optimizations they may have done in Logic. I hit the limits of this machine constantly. "System Cannot Process" and me are well acquainted.

Re: Vocal level automation

There is no end to the stupid fiddly settings in all of these apps. I hate computers. Clip Gain for Reaper is super easy once you've turned it on in your preferences. OMG why the f isn't this a default, and why would I ever think "knob" is a functional setting and not an aesthetic setting? Here I've...

Re: Best vocal recording mic in the $300-500 range?

I have a Rode NTK. It's really nice. It's got a toob in it. But I only really use it if I'm doing something where the sound really has to stand on its own, and I'm in the room where it's set up-- it ain't super portable, requiring a stand and a shock mount and its own big ol' power supply box. Mostl...

Re: Deals On Gear and Software

People reveal a lot about their own level of craft, if not their capability of imagination, when they say things like that. Avicii (RIP) made "Wake Me Up" in FL Studio. So I guess they can scoff all they want from their mom's basement before they head to their gig at Arby's. I don't like FL Studio m...

Legit ppl use all of these DAWs, of course.

Song Fight alums that use Reaper include Brad Sucks and MC Frontalot.

Clip Gain for Reaper is super easy once you've turned it on in your preferences. You can just drag down from the top of an item to reduce the gain.

The Youtube embed code doesn't let you skip to a time spot (hmm), but jump to 4:25 in this video:

Re: Vocal level automation

yeah the "what is doing anything" syndrome is even worse if you use something like Melodyne that duplicates the audio file and plays it instead of the region playing. Yesterday I deleted a region and couldn't for the life of me figure out why it kept playing. Took me like 15 minutes to figure out....

Re: Vocal level automation

My vocal levels are mismatched from section to section. Like the beginning of a chorus that gets louder, or the verse will be soft and the chorus loud and I want them to be about the same level. I have used volume automation in the past, though I just drew it in. I don't see the point in using a DAW...

Something Rotten in Songland

So they kind of are doing a songfightey concept on NBC, starting May 28: https://www.nbc.com/songland Or I guess it's a cross between Shark Tank and The Voice for songwriters. Watched the trailer on YouTube just now, and they want me to believe that the "judges" hear a song and instantly can play it...

Maybe you should filter it on short words? I'm getting a lot of one-letter lyric lines, like "g" or "Y".
That would be nice. Maybe someday I'll feel motivated to make it fancier. For now, just put some whiteout over those where you see them.
