So, any progress report on spam prevention steps? Who exactly is doing what to try to deal with the recent spam thing? fluffy? Spud? Other? Is there anything anybody else can do to help out? It's getting pretty annoying and it seems like we get a spree of spams every other day practically. Manually deleting them seems pretty futile.

Well, I'm still not a forum admin, so if I were to install any of those mods it'd remain unconfigured and therefore probably not do what we want.

OK, spam bombed again today, awesome. JB is very busy these days, so it's kinda like we're down to 1 admin. Maybe it's time to draft somebody else to have admin access to the boards to configure some of the anti-spam mods that could be installed...? fluffy sounds like he's volunteering, and he's already got command line access. ;)

This is not my call. If you would point me to the spam, I would gladly remove it.

Thanks. SPUD

FWIW, in phpBB there is no such thing as "installing mods". In phpBB, mods are files that describe which of the phpBB files to edit and how (open file X, find text Y, insert Z before/after, etc.). It's pretty much the polar opposite of maintainable.

I delete the spamming users (and all their posts) whenever I see them. Deleted one today.

There are moderators on every forum, can they not delete posts?

Moderators can delete posts but they can't necessarily block the spam bots from posting more.

User "fluffy" is now a forum admin.
User "lunkhead" is now a "users and groups" admin.

Administrate wisely, fellows.

Hey jb, it looks like the version of phpBB that's installed is out of date, but I don't have access to the primary dreamhost account (the fightmaster account doesn't have one-click install capability). Could you set the phpBB one-click installer to automatically upgrade phpBB?

I'm getting this occasionally, FYI. Looks like someone added forum spam blocking, but something is not quite right.

Yeah, unfortunately these things are hard to test well. I'll work on it some more. It's weird that it's only showing up occasionally though.

I installed both of the antispam mods found in this thread (both do different things) but for some reason the config for the auto-ban one isn't showing up on the admin panel, either. I hate phpBB.

Although it helps to spell "spam" correctly (and not like "span").

Also apparently BLT got autobanned by the anti-spam script. Hilarious and ironic, but also unintentional. Sigh.
