Gauging Interest: 1-hour "seminar" presentations

Post by jb »

I had an idea that some of us might find fun/educational. During the week of Song Fight Live, we have a series of three or four hour-long presentations by SongFighters who have some kind of expertise that many of us would be interested in. Some examples that spring to mind:

* Frankie gives us a primer on Pop Song Theory
* Starfinger dishes the dirt on Ableton Live
* Ken Mahru's top ten Mastering tips
* Spud walks us through a vintage synth

These are things that could be held at a house (like, say, mine) for the number of folks who'd be into each topic.

Yea? Nay? Suggested subjects/presenters?

I certainly think it would be great to move Songfight Live in the convention format. Multiple days, multiple events, corporate sponsorship!

I'll tell you though, it is hard enough to get everyone rehearsed and to the show sober sometimes.

SF! Live could be like the Penny Arcade Expo of the DIY Internet/undergound/indie music world.

If I were there - I would happily give a presentation of:
* Caravan Ray's guide to erotic dancing for the overweight and over-40s.

I'd attend, but only if we all wore those name tags on the clip ropes. And ate box lunches. And someone would have to blog it on their latest portable device that flips everyone out that you can actually blog from the thing even though no one will read the blog, just because...

But yeah, I'd attend.

I'd totally attend ken's mastering tips...

I'd even collab with somebody else on a drummer / drum machine clinic. I have a lot of input and tips in that drum machine programming ..and much interest in real drums now that there is a set in my studio... tips on how to loop real recordings..the whole nine yards. Not that I claim to be an expert..but I have done more than dabble into the drum programming and will have picked up even more experience in real drumming to tape and loops before the show...

Songfight live Drum clinic brought to you by 'you better not suck' blue and friends. (hell, even Ken plays drums!)

Hey, we had to listen to you for an hour during the guitar solo in your live fight song in Boston. Or maybe that just -felt- like an hour. ;)

I just figured he was getting his pulse back from the night before. Had to make up for it somehow.

What about a 2 hour start to finish seminar where we record/mix a song from scratch?

We should do a 24-hour seminar where we write and record and mix a twenty-minute album with at least six songs on it.
