Thanks for pointing that out. It's fixed now. I suppose that could've been passed off as clever had the entire album been in reverse. Maybe not.king_arthur wrote:Minor glitch on the main page, the 22nd was Saturday, not Monday.

I finished an AAD a couple weeks ago maybe. Mostly just me and electric guitar. It's a dream journal, chronicling some terrible dreams I've been having as well as some reality-based fears, paranoias, and depressions. But with a lot of tongue-in-cheekiness. And a cover of Otis Redding's "These Arms of Mine," which I guess might break the rules but whatever. Anyway it's called Dream Journal (yeah, I was feeling very inspired). You can get itta here!

I listened to this a few times; it's hit and miss from chord to chord but #1 is some of that classic stuff I crave and it's made for looking out the window at the rain to (and I remember that not only is it not raining above the clouds but it's sunny, I think I'm developing SAD) it's cool hearing it on an electric too, makes it sound like smiths/roses/durutti column but with more soul. I need to let the more obscure songs sink in a bit more.

Luke, some of the storytelling lyrics you go there are fucking great.
though i had weird dreams, like being abducted by aliens, and giant telle tubies,
but there’s no competition to your weird shit.
my favorite by far has to be entry# 04, not sure how factual it is,
but i can clearly vision the lyrics in head.
good stuff.

Started working on an Album-a-day at 11 am today.
Justin came over around noon and just left. He drummed on three songs before he headed out.
I have around 11 minutes of music completed, and no lyrics yet. I am going to try to get the minimum 9 minutes of music done before working on lyrics and vocals done. Will keep you posted.
ROCK!

Misery loves company, so why not?! I forgot how exhausting this can be, but it's already proving to be worth it. I am just over 9 hours into this, and I have over 20 minutes of produced music, but I have no lyrics or vocals yet.j$ wrote:You go girl! You finish, I'll do one sometime this week. That may not be encouragement, but it's meant to be.
I am going to go grab a bite to eat, while listening to my instrumentals. Hopefully I will get a clue of what I should write about.
I am aiming to be done with this in a few hours, so I can get a reasonable amount of sleep before work tomorrow.
ROCK!

So, I started an <a href="http://crapart.spacebar.org/aad/">Album-a-day</a> at 11 A.M. on Sunday, December 17th, 2006. The songs were fully wrapped up by 4 A.M. on Monday, December 18th, 2006. I barely made the minimum deadline of 20 minutes of music, but every song is a fully produced song with live drums, live instrumentaion and in most cases multiple harmony vocals.
Special thanks to Justin Combustion for laying down the drums for "Stapler", "You Don't Have to Stay", and "I Can Not Function" before either of us had a
clue what the songs were going to be about.
Enjoy!

Wow ... I thought an AAW was hard, but an AAD ... I love this stuff. Haven't had a chance to listen to all, but stapler could become one of my favorites! Hurry up guitar and yelling sounds kind of like a Flvxxm Flvorvm song, and You Don't Have To Stay has a bit of a Josh Woodwardesque feel to it ... similar, yet still Glenn Case. Love I Can Not Function, especially the intro. It really caught me off guard. Great job!

Damn Glen, you are a music making machine. 7 songs in 17 hours, and they are all listenable too. I will say that every song sounds like a song I've heard before, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Did you mimic the music from one band and the melody of a different band that fit the timing? Share your secret with us. Either way, they could all be played in a lounge and sold on a cd if you wanted to make a living at it. Great job Glenn.

Yeah, it can be a marathon for sure. Especially if you are trying to produce full songs from the ground up.jolly roger wrote:Wow ... I thought an AAW was hard, but an AAD ... I love this stuff.
Glad you enjoy it. I was not sure what people were going to think of that one as I was writing the lyrics, but I was against a deadline and I knew there was no time to second guess myselfjolly roger wrote:Haven't had a chance to listen to all, but stapler could become one of my favorites!
I did make a conscious effort to make an album that didn't have a bunch of songs that sound exactly alike. It's no easy task when you are working with a 24 hour deadline. According to your comments, it looks like I may have succeeded, which is cool.jolly roger wrote:Hurry up guitar and yelling sounds kind of like a Flvxxm Flvorvm song, and You Don't Have To Stay has a bit of a Josh Woodwardesque feel to it ... similar, yet still Glenn Case. THANK YOU for the comments, and for taking the time to check it out.
Listenability is a plus. A plus that I strive for, so thanks!Billy's Little Trip wrote:Damn Glen, you are a music making machine. 7 songs in 17 hours, and they are all listenable too.
I think it's the shoes.Billy's Little Trip wrote:I will say that every song sounds like a song I've heard before, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Did you mimic the music from one band and the melody of a different band that fit the timing? Share your secret with us.
Yeah, it's got to be the shoes.
For people who do like my sound, I do have a couple of tips, actually.
1. Listen to the most eclectic selection of music that you can bear to listen to. The more you listen to, the more influences you can draw from. Since everything is derivative, it helps if you don't just listen to one band or genre.
2. Let your chord structure convey the emotion of the song in such a way that a listener wouldn't need words to know how you feel. Sounds difficult, but I just tend to play chords until I hear one that actually describes how I feel in a musical form.
3. Learn how to mix and master, and if you become good at it, let me know how you did it. Please be sure to describe the process in a way that an idiot could understand.
Are you calling me a freaking Lounge singer?!?!?!Billy's Little Trip wrote:Either way, they could all be played in a lounge and sold on a cd if you wanted to make a living at it. Great job Glenn.
Well... could be worse. Thanks for listening, and for the vote of confidence.

EDIT: Let the record show that repeated listens have lead me to despise my vocals on "Repair My Heart". That is all.

I had to laugh here. You're ok with being called an idiot, but not a lounge singer, LOL.Are you calling me a freaking Lounge singer?!?!?!
I think I could have worded it better when I said, "Did you mimic the music from one band and the melody of a different band". I should have said mimic the style, but I see you knew what I meant with the way you answered my question.
As far as your writing formula, I not only agree with it, I practice it.

Sure, you could do that, but it would be cheating and cheating yourself out of the sense of accomplishment that comes with finishing an AAD legitimately.fragsta wrote:How does AAD work? Is it as simple as plugging that you created an album in 24 hours? Surely you could just put together some stuff you created ages ago and say you just wrote it?
What's the point of even making an AAD if you're going to just throw stuff up there that you already made? It's more about pushing yourself to see if you can rise to the challenge.
The rules according to the <a href="http://crapart.spacebar.org/aad/">website</a>:
<i>To create an Album-a-Day, you record a piece of music following these rules:
# It must be written, performed, recorded, post-produced, etc. all in one contiguous 24-hour period (preferably with no sleep break in there).
# It must be at least 20 minutes or 30 songs. (many short songs tend to work better than long songs which drag on forever, trust me.)
# Your band may have multiple participants, but they should not work on different songs simultaneously. (So just one song being worked on at a time.)
# No ideas from before the chosen day! This means covers or reinterpretations are not allowed.
# No out-takes! If you start a song, finish it and put it on the album.</i>
It's like the musical equivalent of running a one day marathon. The material isn't likely to be amazing, but if you even finish without cheating, it can be a great feeling.
ROCK!

Ahh... see, I hadn't seen the rules I wasn't quite sure how it worked. Sounds like fun though, I'll pick a day some time this holiday and try it out I think. The website also states "A bad song is better than no song". I agree that it's kind of a drag for the artist, but I think I also agree with the sentiment. Certainly I can name several artists whose outtakes I would love to hear.jimtyrrell wrote:I don't understand the purpose of that rule, honestly. I don't think a disregard for quality needs to be imposed by rule.
