Does anyone know anything about mobile phone stuff?

After surviving without one for many years - personal circumstances have forced me to get one of the annoying little bastards recently. Luckily - I had the presence of mind to buy one that I can even use in the USA! (WTF is wrong with you people?!? Drive on the wrong side of the road, don't use the metric system and use a phone system that is incompatible with every other civilised nation on Earth!! I am looking forward to carrying a concealed weapon and driving without a seatbelt though, but I digress...)

Anyway - who knows where/how/if I can get a pre-paid SIM card for about $20 that I can slip into the phone so I can use it for the few days I there?

Ideally I'd like to pick one up as soon as I land at LAX. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Caravan Ray...I think most of America has actually moved into the times with Seat Belt Laws. My state has that clicky little motto (pardon the pun)

click it or ticket.

I already KNOW GEORGIA DOES, I got a ticket for that there once.

As does California. And a waiting period for the firearming that I think is longer than your trip. Unless Governor Terminator changed that in the time since I've been from the sunny shores.

On the phone front I've got no clue.

There are a few cut-rate prepaid GSM providers which will give you a handful of minutes for $20. The major GSM providers here (e.g. T-Mobile and Cingular) only do prepaid as an alternative to a contract and still charge you like $50 for the initial line setup.

I think Oxygen Wireless will do exactly what you want, at a rate of 14 cents/minute, though I don't know for sure. I just see their ads all over Seattle.

For my rewrite of "WTF" for SFL, the lines about "the guys from California having trouble with their truck" have turned into "17 is closed, and everybody's stuck..." That is one nuts place to drive...
