Okay, confession time.

I'm not all broken up about this.

And:

Whoever my coveree was supposed to be? Well, I was intentionally boxing them in, nearly forcing them to do the Thin Lizzy cover.

Nosferatu Man? Even I can't play this. A two guitar jam, rife with odd meter changes, a feedback squeal requiring a 24th fret (or re-tuning), so on, so forth, ad nuaseum.

Jew Boy Flower Head? A little easier, musically, maybe. However, as with much of the Melvins catalog, the lyrics are nearly indecipherable, with many variants of "heard" lyrics existing. Daunting, but possible.

Yackety Sax? Short of a midi based workaround, I don't think there is anybody currently hanging at songfight capable of playing this delightful jem, you know, the theme from The Benny Hill Show? (sidebar: I have an awesome version of this on vinyl entitled "yakety moog") Not to slight our collective abilities, but this song is built one one complex skittering sax line, and furthermore, is an instrumental.

Don't Believe a Word? Okay, now we're talking. A rock song, and a picture perfect rock song at that. Anybody who had to pick from these 4 would HAVE to pick this one. (sidebar: I was born in '77, and named after Philip Lynott. My pop was a huge Thin Lizzy fan.)

I'm not gonna freak out if I don't get a cover, and I'm sure you chaps have enough going on, so seriously, don't go crazy. I KNOW why I didn't get one!

And, uh, I was only teasing about the file sharin', Heather!

How I got a good laugh:

Last night was a bad bad night. To cheer up, I played Karoake Revolution. It suddenly found myself with the choice to sing "Girls Just Want To Have Fun". So I did my best Goodtime Johnny impersonation and went to town. Funny thing is even though I changed lyrics frequently to match the J$ cover, I got an excellent score. :D

The Residents did an entire album of covers...of their own songs! How cool is that?

That's funny because I didn't recognize that photo. Phil told me it was from his Melvin's Show pictures, but he didn't mention the extra finger! Hmmm...

Ha ha ha! That's hilarious. I did kinda notice, thinking "I would never do that for a photo, especially a photo with Tony from The Dames, but, well, I was drinking that night......."

Nice one, Tibby!

bzl wrote:In! To make it less challengifying this year, here are four songs that the rock and roll band "charcoal" have already covered at some point in the past. Because if I can do it, anyone can.

Powerline: by Husker du
Charlotte sometimes: by the Cure
Ninety-nine red ballons: by Nena
New dawn fades: by Joy division
I was digging through a box of old cassettes on the weekend and came across something which could be considered a 'bonus' GOM for Ben.

Once upon a time, a very young Caravan Ray (~18 y.o) was the lead singer of The Mess - the most anarchic bunch of young punks ever to burst out of the middle-class suburban comfort of Newcastle, New South Wales (or so we thought).

Some time around early 1986, I recall The Mess were the headline act at the opening of the new bar at the Newcastle College of Advanced Education - the attached mp3 is a recording from the night of their version of Joy Division's New Dawn Fades

I offer this here as a minor curiosity to anyone interested. In this recording can be heard the sound of a young man with his heart full of rock and roll dreams, a young man still blissfully unaware that his spirit will be inexorably crushed by time and circumstance, leaving him a bitter and twisted middle-aged, balding public servant in suburban Brisbane, pathetically posting his cries for help to an anonymous internet who just doesn't want to listen....(you can help - vote for Caravan Ray in When It Snowed)
