Ken Plume, who ran the "Masters of Song Fu" competition years ago, is bringing it back as "SongAlong". It will be noncompetitive this time, with prompts issued on Fridays and songs due a week later. The first prompt will be released tomorrow, May 1.
I believe that SpinTunes started as an offshoot of Masters of Song Fu, but someone like Tommy G can fill in more of the details. In any case, I'm curious to see what this will be like. I just heard about it today when Hank Green tweeted about it.

They've posted their first prompt: Write a song about an unlikely friendship.
Thanks for the heads up! First I've heard of it, which is odd but totally on brand for Ken.
I'm glad Molly's involved as well. I'll have to see BYD enters something in for it as it takes shape.
The original Masters of Song Fu was a very fun experience in 2008-2010. When that ran it's course, SpinTunes started up with many of the participants.
The Revamped Song Fu in 2012 was a good distraction and highlighted The Doubleclicks very innovative songs and styles, but was light on participation.
I'm looking forward to see what Ken's new 'SongAlong' turns into. He's had connections for the more 'famous' contributors in the past, but the original version as a contest where you could potentially 'challenge a master' writing a song was very fun and exciting.

BYD's going to try and get in this one. Song is due Thursday night at Midnight EDT if anyone else is interested.
I did see Hank Green and Jon Hodgman retweeting it, so it might have some legs this year.

BYD is in. They had some issues with the submission form, so they might be taking late entries, but confirmed they did get the mp3.
2nd challenge is up - "This week, write a song… that will become the next dance craze."
Light and generic enough to get some responses.

Just found out there will be a listening party for these tunes by Molly Lewis on Tuesday 5p EDT/ 8p PDT.
So far 13 songs for the 1st challenge, 6 for 2nd, and a 3rd challenge posted.
I’m going to try and be In The chat for it if possible. I’ve seen other SpinTuners in the mix but a lot of new folks as well. Should be fun.
