Happy new year to you all!

Anybody want to check in on their 2022 goals?

I hope I can sleep better next year. I'd like to get some regular exercise. I'm hoping to try some outdoor winter activities like snowshoeing and/or cross country skiing. It'd be fun to make more music. I haven't been reading much in a while, so it'd be nice to read at least one book a month. I may finally buy a nice semi-hollowbody guitar or a nice acoustic. Oh yeah, it would be great if I had my permanent replacement tooth by the end of the year of course.
Still working on sleep but I think it's going a little better. I've been using the super old low end Fitbit a coworker gave me years ago to track my sleep and exercise progress which has been helpful. I did well with the exercise during the nice weather months but once winter kicked in I dropped the ball. I'm contemplating getting a walking treadmill to go under my standing desk to try to address that. I made plenty of music and I also did Inktober again for the second time. I did not read 12 books, I read 2.5. I _did_ finally buy an ES-335! And a nice acoustic! Sadly still no tooth.

2023 goals:
- get a tooth
- improve physical and mental health care
- read
- keep making stuff
- travel (we're hopefully going to Scotland in May)

Hope you are all doing well or at least hanging in there.

Happy New Year everybody.

I blame any failure to meet my 2022 goals on my terrible work/life balance, which was most extreme near the end of 2022. For reasons that are too boring to delve into here, I suspect that won't be quite as big an issue in 2023.

I am very optimistic about 2023 in all areas: family, friendships, work, health, creative productivity, and overall satisfaction. I hear that the current conventional wisdom is that New Year's resolutions are somehow a form of self-sabotage, so I don't intend to make any specific 'resolutions' for 2023. But my gut says that 2023 will be a good year, and I'll make concerted efforts towards ensuring that.

And I do earnestly wish the very best to everybody for 2023. Please continue making lots of music - I listen to your songs, I make cover versions of your songs, I'm a fan, and I vote.

Happy 2023 everyone! Hope everyone has a fantastic crazy awesome year! Here's hoping there's some political accountability in 23, we need it. ...or at least "I" need it so I don't just say "f**k this" and run for potus myself! :P
For those that don't give two shyts one way or the other, I remember when I didn't care. It was ...sigh...good.

I’m trying to go back to school but the damn admissions office seems to be hard to get a hold of. I’m kind of torn.
Need to finish the degree but I like my hobbies. Guess we’ll see what the new year brings.
I took six classes last year and have two more to finish my English degree this May. The last semester was almost too much (partially self inflicted) but I still managed to write lots of songs and not get divorced. I debated but I've decided not to walk. My mother isn't here to see me and she's the main reason I actually got off my ass and went back. I do have a publishing internship this semester, though, so we'll see how much time I actually have for music. I also didn't drink any alcohol in 2022. I've decided to continue the habit into 2023 but I'm not promising myself that I won't have one or two at a show or something if I don't have to drive and I've met my weight loss goals. We'll see.

2023:
- Continue to lose a little weight. My wife is rocking a new diet and has lost well over 25 lbs in the past two months. I'm down well over ten.
- Maybe get back into running/exercise. I still do my core strengthening exercise at least a few times a week for my back but I've lost what endurance I had regained.
- I actually have three or four albums/EPs scheduled for release. Mostly just polishing mixes and letting them go. I intend to get one ready in the next two weeks, and another on spring break. I'm free from school starting in mid May so I should be able to get another one or two projects finished by years end. I'll be happy if I get two out, though.
- I'll keep doing songfight, PRF Tribute, FAWM and 50/90 as time allows. It turns out that having less time makes me incredibly focused if/when I actually get around to musicification. In other words, I'm better at finishing what I start AND not starting if I don't think I can finish.
- I intend to continue to learn to be nice. ie., refraining from most political discussions on social media, admitting that I'm wrong (even if I don't think I am) in order to keep the peace and trying to remember to do unexpected things for people, even very small things, especially for my wife who deserves better than I give her most of the time.

Happy New Year to all. Let's hope it's not as garbage filled as other recent ones.

I'm nearing the 300 Paco songs mark which last year I stated might be my retirement point. But I must admit that 325 or 350 might be more like it. And I don't know if could watch those pesky BSSers roll past me, quite yet. (Love you guys!) Sorry, I'm not done yet! :)

I don't believe in New Years resolutions, but I am giving the trendy Dry January a go. Way too much drinking this last year. Always in the appropriate time and place, but amounts and regularity too much. So...cheers?

Work is a grind. If I can make it a year and a half longer, I'll be vetted for insurance, which would be great. Three and a half more years, I can receive a tiny pension. Go bag groceries or something. But man, after 35+ years mostly working in psych hospitals, I'm feeling it. (I work for the state now, hence the pension) Crazy is my normal. Whee!

I sold off a lot of gear last year, no more new guitars in my future. And I'm starting to sniff around for a new recording method. I will definitely be pleading for help around these parts the closer I get, be forewarned.

I hope this great corner of the universe continues to march on. I love it here, love you all, and love the music. Keep on keepin' on, folks. Peace!
Bringin' the stink since 2006.

I am just in the process of planning a cycling holiday in Tuscany followed by a week or so in the Scottish Highlands in May (with Finland and Singapore thrown in as transit stops). Maybe we can meet for an Irn-Bru somewhere.

Happy New Year everyone!

My two main NY goals last year were to buy a house and get rid of some stupid dumb Covid kilos.

Happy to say, we finally, finally, finally managed to buy a house, and moved in the nick of time, on December 22 2022.

Our last rental was 86m^2 and 1/3 of that was taken up by a staircase because it was a three storey house. It was supposed to be a temporary rental for 6 months or so after a previous purchase had fallen through and we looked for something else. Then Covid happened, and a bunch of job bullshit, then suddenly we’d been living in a tiny house with no storage and almost no room to move for three years. The house was in an identikit estate far enough away from town that we had to drive or take the bus to do anything. The new house is 140m^2 or so over two floors, with a garage that I have plans to convert into a printmaking studio. Even with a whole bunch of stuff still taking up space in boxes, we have so much more room to move than the last house, and are slowly getting out of the habit of crunching up our bodies to fit through spaces. I chose the town we’re in my looking at the Irish Rail map and picking the best place for connectivity, so we’re living in a small town that’s a connection hub for rail to Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick. Everything is walkable, including a gym with a pool, and last week they had a birthday sale on memberships, so I’ve started walking to the gym again and doing actual real exercise in a space that’s bigger than the 50x200cm space between the end of our bed and a wardrobe.

At the last place Toshiro had a tiny room that had to become his office, and I had a slightly bigger room that was printmaking studio/music room/video production room/spare bedroom. Now Toshiro has a huge office because he’s permanently remote working, and I have a room that’s around about the same size as my previous one, but it only needs to be an indoor art/video studio AND it has a good quality built in wardrobe that’s perfect for storing all my materials. We have another room that we’re sharing as a music room / spare bedroom (thank you, IKEA Friheten), and I have my outdoor garage to upgrade for more studio space.

First job of 2023 (after we finally finish unpacking) is to repaint my plan drawers, which are the base of my desk, then I’ll repaint the studio room. We plan to do an energy upgrade to the house (new windows, new doors, heat pump, more insulation, hopefully solar) using the government grant program here, but that will take some time because there’s a pretty long waiting list. After I get the desk done, I need to paint and assemble a telecaster for my niece, which will be a late Christmas present.

Another thing that happened last year that I wasn’t expecting was that the Irish government started a trial where they selected 2000 artists at random to receive a basic income for three years, and, dear reader, I was selected. It’s made a huge difference already with taking some of the financial pressure off moving, and it means I don’t have to look for another job here if I don’t want to. There’s no restrictions with the grant; we can spend the money however we like without the pressure of needing to hit targets or make specific work, and it’s such a huge relief. I can use the money to get my studio space set up how I want it. I also have an album I want to finish this year (after putting it on hold last year), and having that money means I can probably justify sending it to a professional for mastering instead of doing it myself.

The reason that I put the album on hold last year is that I had a successful proposal for showing artwork and speaking at a printmaking conference in September, so most of the year before moving was spent making as much work as possible to show and talk about, I filmed all the production and the video footage has been sitting on a hard drive since, ready to be edited into videos for YouTube. Once I’m set up again and have a few videos edited, I want to keep going with the zine / artist book project that I was working on for that project as well. Here’s some of the work I printed for that.

Those are relief printed from hand cut cardboard letters and I was super happy with how the ghost printing worked out. What you can’t see in the photos is the word “invisible” embossed over the top of the coloured text.

When I was packing up all the artwork from my drawers, I realised I probably need to make a concerted effort to sell a bunch of it this year just to clear out old stuff and have a fresh start, so once the drawers are painted and I’m ready to unpack stuff back into them, I guess I need to make that a goal. Ugh. Not looking forward to doing it, but will love it being done. And it will be good to inject any cash I get into upgrading the garage studio as well. Trying to sell artwork is unfun in the extreme, but it’ll be good to have old work no longer taking up space.

So yeah, 2023:

1. Finish losing Covid kilos
2. Upgrade indoor art studio
3. Set up music room
4. Start planning garage studio
5. Sell some artwork
6. Edit the masses of video footage from my hard drive
7. Paint some guitars
8. Make some new local friends

Happy New Year everyone, and congratulations!

Our big goal for 2022 was to finally get our En Suite done (it was an unfinished mess for the last 8 years), and we did. It’s so nice to have our own shower.

For 2023, we’ll see.
