Bots on Boards...

Post by anti-m »

I dunno if you guys care about this so much... and I don't know that this issue really has much impact on the board experience in general...

but I notice you guys are getting hammered by Bot registrants. You may want to install some variety of "confirm that you are a human" safeguard on your registration protocol to prevent folks like

"DeD86259 in Mongolia"

and

"Andkwcvmti in EV"

from registering...

...though I suspect you have better things to do than worry about such tweaks to the land o songfight.

phpBB comes with a captcha function these days, which is easy to turn on. also i wrote a little patch which makes it so that bots which register but don't verify don't show up on user lists so they don't have any effect. I need to make that stuff available again I guess but in the meantime it's at http://beesbuzz.biz/code/phpbb/memberli ... spam.patch

I take back my previous assertion that the bots have no impact on the board experience... Once the bots start posting, it can be a real pain in the arse...for you admins especially.

I know the PHP boards can be set up to include a "identify this graphic representation of a word..." as part of the sign-up protocol. Perhaps something to consider?

The bot quoted me. I think that is the funniest thing in the world.

Hey Spud & JB since there is an awful lot of these bots on the memberlist, want someone to compile a list so you can do some kind of mass execution?

Quoted by Robots!

I'd also be happy to compile such a list for such a purpose!

I have. It was one of the first shows I saw when I moved to the Bay Area. It was amazing.

I have just done a mass execution, but if you want to put together a list of remaining suspects, go ahead.

Seriously, though, there's ways of preventing spammers from even finding the forums to begin with, and making it harder for them to actually register and post if they do.

From January 4th on, every new member has been a spambot except the following:

jessecooper
akash
Francois
Cultofzoee
Pierre
Phlemingo
Carpetburn

Today we got one from a bestiality site. That's just wrong.
