Marvel or DC?

Post by john m »

Choose your comics.

Marvel: X-Men, Spiderman, Incredible Hulk, Avengers, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Captain America

DC: Superman, Batman, Flash, Wonder Woman

Yes, I know there are more characters in each universe; these are just some important ones. Poll created because each company has now had a movie in theaters recently, and because I'm curious. And bored.

DC. Aside from Runaways and maybe Ultimate Spiderman, I can't say I'm terribly interested in anything Marvel has to offer right now.

Besides, DC has Grant Morrison on their side.

Silver Age Marvel always wins hands down over DC for me, heroes with real problems, only real DC hero I ever liked that much was the Flash...

...though recently Marvel has been rather clutching at straws, but then DC went through that 'bout a decade ago.

Hate the new spidey costume, and the whole Civil War things gonna get rather tedious I bet, but still Marvel all the way coz I'm old and remember it way back... :D

Someone just gave me the collected first 12(?) issues, and it's pretty cool. Except ....

[spoilers]Why is it that it has to be the black kid who turns out to be the villain? And then get nuked rather graphically seconds later? Soon as I read it, I thought ... urrrmmm. Feels slightly out of keeping with the rest of it. Also, why is it I like The Pride far more than I do the slightly annoying teenagers?[/spoilers]

It seems to me Marvel going, "Hang on, rememebr the Mutant Registration Act? That was good. let's do it again, only EXACTLY THE FRICKIN SAME." That said
Peter Parker super-comin' out on national tv was quite the twist as they say
Marvel can fuck off, except Runaways, Daredevil and X-Factor.

Superman already chocked on a turd last time Stan Lee wrote him. Or was that a turd choking on Superman? Jim Lee > Stan Lee.

Did one of those companies do the (1980's) Conan black-and-white comics? Or was it somebody else?

There's this one special issue of Swamp Thing where he goes to Hell to retrieve his lover. That issue comes close to making me vote DC.

But Marvel has Spider-Man, and Peter Parker was always my hero. My internal Peter Parker, not Tobey Maguire's. Which is fine, but Tobey isn't quite the Peter Parker of this little boy's imagination. Too short, for one thing. And Kirsten Dunst is fine. FOINE even, but she's no Mary Jane. Also too short.

And also, Marvel has always seemed a little dirtier than DC. Their characters closer to the earth, less archetypical, more human, more prone to the vicissitudes of something akin to real life than the goofy teenage hijinks and mindless jingoism and opportunism of DC.

So, Marvel.

I'm votin DC. My friend is a huge comic book nerd and he got me into great Batman graphic novels like "Return of the Dark Knight" and "The Killing Joke". I even started liking the other characters like Green Lantern and Green Arrow. Currently Marvel isnt doing anything too cool. The whole civil war thing and the new spidey costume is making my friend and i angry. But DC has this "one year later" idea that they are doing right now which is actually really cool. The idea itself just blows me away. so yeah im goin DC. 8)

Civil War....Identity Crisis....The House of M....52/One Year Later....

All 4 of them have left a bad taste in my mouth. If it wasn't for Runaways, I'd be on a complete comic sabbatical.

For the record, with the exception of Batman, I find DC to have no redeeming qualities. Marvel all the way.

All Star Superman
Seven Soldiers of Victory
JLA: Classified
Watchmen

And if you count Vertigo, which I do:
100 Bullets
Fables
Y: The Last Man
Sandman
V for Vendetta
Swamp Thing
Doom Patrol
Animal Man
The Invisibles

DC's got some awesome stuff going for it.

With me, Marvel just edges out a win.

DC has Vertigo and great stuff has come out of that---with the exception of Doom Patrol. I hate Doom Patrol.

Marvel has X-men and there have been so many strong stories in X-men. The history is so lush.

But DC has the two best comics I have ever read- Teen Titans: The Judas Contract and Death: The High Cost of Living.

But Marvel has my favorite character of all time: Magik.

But Marvel has flagship characters I can't stand like The Fantastic Four.

But DC has flagship characters that I hate even more like Wonder Woman, The Flash and especially Superman.

Both have had too many ridiculous gimmicks lately.

But Marvel just edges out DC for me, especially with Brian Michael Bendis and Joss Whedon on board.

In the end though, it's all about just finding a great story and enjoying it and it doesn't matter what publisher it comes from as long as it's good.

I'm with Marvel for all the reasons JB gave in his post. Except of course I've had nothing whatever to do with his internal Peter Parker. Paradoxically, however, my three favorite comics recently have all been from DC (Catwoman, Gotham Central, and Y: The Last Man). Still, Spider-Man is by far my all-time favorite superhero, so I gotta give the props to Marvel.
