Sausage Boy: Now this is rather accessable, this is more like the kind of stuff I wish you did more often, alternate vocal going "Bah Bah" every 4th bar, break it up just before the chorus with a nice synthy/poppy/bleepy line would provide just that extra kick of variation, but generally this is rather good and the beat is really head boppingly cool! 7/10

Lost Masters: There's something really compelling going on here, that I can't quite put my finger on, I like the electronic/rock fusion and the differing effects you use on the vocals works really well, it does sound longer than it actually is, which is always a bad sign, maybe because it's rather two dimensional up until around 2:30ish when in kicks back in when the two voice parts unite. good work! 7/10

Uncle Jim: This has a real post-sebastian lovin spoonful feel to it, that is absolutely gorgeous to my ears, reminds me of 'Never Goin' Back' and I love that track! in fact anything vaguely lovin spoonful related, gets a huge plus in my book, so consider yourself well plussed! 8/10

Cash Utensils: Phil's track, given the spOOn treatment, I think this works rather well, and I'd like to do another track with Phil in the not too distant future! 8/10

Timmy the Tapeworm: I'm getting fed up with this nonsense 1/10

Chopped Liver Meat God: Has a nice Christmassy feel to this, by 1:07 I've worked out that it's going to be an instrumental, which hey! that's cool, though has nothing to do with the title, could just as easily be called ' Shipwreck Song' or 'Sailor's Playtime' come to think of it this does has a slightly nautical feel, needs a hornpipe! 7/10

Rabid Garfunkel: Ooh great bass, and excellent Johnny Cash-ness going on, I'd like that bass turned up a tad as it really drives, the "Hey Hey's" are xcellent, and yeah pull that girls pig-tails, this is rather cool! one for the stereo on those long drives down to canterbury at 1am whilst heading towards the dartford flyover, go on boy crank it up! 8/10

sb I like this one - the drum patterns and the minalist arrangement going on - I wish the vocals weren't so disorted and loud - cos they're drowning out what sounds like one of your best arrangements going on in the background, squishing out the subtleties and making it sound more repetitive than it probably is. Is it just two basses? it's got a nice rigid funkiness about it (if that's even possible). Nice and warm, just a shame you were too close to the mic - a heavy compression might mean you could have turned it down in the mix and still be legible ... and it's too long - as it approaches 3 minutes it should be thinking of ending, not going on for another minute IMO

LM - Cool, but guilty of overworking a great chorus to the point of taking away the pleasure of it a little. I like the non-megaphone vocal very much (i recognise the voice but can't place it, a statement which will make me look stupid if it turns out to be the same person doing both!) The megaphone vocal is good but a bit rough on an already rough mix. It and certain other things could be smoothed out to the improvement of the mix, but this is undoubtedly a good song. I would just turn the megaphone effect down a touch so the voice underneath can emerge. This is a front runner for my vote.

UJ - lovely guitar. The tone is just smooth and conjures up warm summer nights, which given the weather in London today is freezing, is very welcome. The vocal is fine, although not really my cup of tea. This keeps promising to build up to something - the bass is out of tune? Or you're being deliberately anti-the-song anyway! I like it when it really starts building at 2.00ish. Is the out-of-tune bass meant to signify something? Sorry to go on about it I just can't imagine that someone would record something so pretty and tightly and not notice... every time it pops into the mix it drags me out of the mood and makes me squint. Random jaziness is annoying enough, without having one string out of tune, really out of tune - I'll stop going on about it now - you got the point I'm sure! I like the effect on the bvs very much.

CU – Ouch! There’s some nasty moments in this and some lovely ones, and you’re never sure when they’re gonna pop up. I like the Hall&Oates /Phil Bailey mood going on, and it promises to be great at times, but there’s some wayward notes and slightly odd timing issues that mean this isn’t all that much fun to listen to. Certainly not as much as it could have been. I had to stop before the end unfortunately. I have a hangover and it’s not helping!

CLMG – This starts out like The Hidden Cameras and then goes with the sitar-sounding guitar goes into a very nice territory. This is my favourite of your submissions and not because it’s instrumental. It just feels considered and whole and gets a very nice mood going on. Nice work!

RG – Awesome Birthday Party vibe going on. Very cool. Nice and short and efficient. I really like this – totally my bag.

So I am torn between Lost Masters & Rabid Garfunkel. I will listen a couple more times to those and let you know what I decide…

EDIT: Damn, hard choice. I am going for Lost masters - sorry RG, you deserve loads of votes and if I could put a vote each, I would. There is nothing between them for me.

"JALAWT" Reviews

Sausage Boy: Holy crap. Rifles and swords hunting aliens, terrorists, Mexicans and mutants. This is some crazy stuff. Points for going to the different place lyrically. Does this need to be a 3:47 long song? Hell no. The bridge is atrocious.

Lost Masters: guitars plus electronics make me smile when done right. This is done right. The electronics accent the guitars nicely. I like the vocal styles. It's Mike Patton meets Rob Zombie. Spectacular work.

u n c l e j i m: I'm not so sure about the vocal harmonies. But the song is not without its charm. It's a little long since it lacks variation or a real strong hook, but it definitely has its charm.

Cash Utencils: Wages at the Disco, huh. Some of these lyrics are really bad. Like a ball and a tether. UGH! Musically, it's okay. Nothing outstanding but nothing terrible. But the lyrics have gotta go.

Timmy the Tapeworm: My least favorite TtT track. That went nowhere.

CLMG: That was a great instrumental. Now the tough part. Does it convey "Just as long as we're together". I would think that an instrumental with that title would have to incorporate two different elements into a whole. But I don't get that here. I'm having a hard time figuring out how this instrumental relates to the title.

Rabid Garfunkel: Pigtail pulling. Classy. That was okay but nothing to write home about.

Sausage Boy - You make some weird music, man. This is actually pretty listenable, though. I'm not crazy about the subject matter, but whatever. This is a little more poppy and normal than your typical raging death stomp, though it does include bits of that. A nice effort, not too insane. Good job.

Lost Masters - I like the industrialesque thing going on. I'm not in love with the vocals. I can't decide if they get better or worse when you start overdriving the microphone. I suppose I like the way the two vocal elements going on contrast. What is this about? I guess it doesn't matter with this kind of music. This is pretty good. I like how it changes up about 40 seconds or so from the end. Eh, I don't know. Decent piece of work.

u n c l e j i m (annoying spaces between letters guy) - Great first line. Thanks, Captain Obvious. I guess the poetry is decent. Not sure why I'm hearing a distorted vocal or whatever. Why are there dissonant weirdo intervals being played on an upright bass? I wish I knew what was going on, here. This is a little weird, but I suppose still mostly pleasant.

Cash Utensils - The vocals don't sound too great (in tune, I mean). Does Nigel just make beats that are impossible to sing over? I don't understand how you're so off, here. I like that snare sound quite a bit. The vocals sound a little better, as the end nears, but something's still not right, overall. A pretty disappointing effort, mainly just vocally. The instrumental aspect was quite nice.

Chopped Liver Meat God - Pretty nice for a monochordal instrumental piece, eh? Almost universally praised, but not getting any votes. Oh well. Worse things have happened.

Rabid Garfunkel - A bit short, a bit lo-fi. Still probably the best song for this title. I don't really like the sound of the lead guitar. Everything else sounds fine, though. Yeah, I guess, no complaints really. Good stuff. This wins this round for me.

Like the tension set by the ascending chromatic stuff in the background, but the wall of blitty drums on top of everything kinda kills it for me.

Lost Masters
Could use more something. Unless you're going for an industrial ballad. While there's noise under your lyrics, it ain't quite enough to be music, and the lack lets your vocals down. Your drum machine/sequencer's gotta play more than just eighth notes, man. Explore!

Heh, the opening made me anticipate Pink Floyd's "Wish you were here" coming out of the speakers. Breathe, damnit. Sing with full lungs, and stop that throat pinching tonal control. Double bass sounds just off enough to be real. Song meanders around without going anywhere.

Is this distortion-fight? Guitar's doing something nice, but the tone is so pinched and weak that it's like it's hiding in the corner hoping daddy won't hit it again. Is there a bass in there? I think so. C'mon and hurt us, y'all. Bring them levels up.

Oh yeah, the instrumental. Yeah, there's the changeup with the celste, sort of (±1:20). Good drum sound & feel. The bass & keys are doing something nice, they might do nicely with some volumey variation too, swelling in and out of the straight-eighth droney guitar, and keep the ears of the listener alert and involved. Weird christmas vibe. Good job, yo.

Dude, not at all! I had a great time working on this and we did pull a vote. If you'll remember, KA and I even did a song or two that got NO votes, so I'm sure my songwriting or at least, in-attention to detail, was at least partially to blame. I know my guitar tone kinda sucked too, but I still don't have an amp, so maybe I should have done acoustic?

So, if ya wanna do a "Prince" title, I am still open lyrically on two titles, so if ya wanna try a different approach...maybe you write "I Wanna Be Your Lover" or "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" and then I sing? I'm also open to other ideas too. Just PM me!

There is only one vocalist, me. I'm addicted to the overdub.

The song is about a middle age couple discovering kinky sex after being vanilla their whole relationship and how it changes/improves the dynamic between them. Very inspired by the Savage Love Podcast.
