How to wire a keyboard speaker into 1/4" output

Post by The Anchors »

I bought a Yamaha PSS-80 from a thrift store the other day for hella cheap. It sounds sweet but it doesn't have a 1/4" output and I don't like having to mic it up. Is there a way I can rewire the speaker into a 1/4" out?

Thanks!

If it has a headphone jack you can just use a simple adapter. If not, you can just open the case up and wire the speaker's wires to a 1/4" jack (available at your local electronic part supplier e.g. Radio Shack). Be careful about your levels though (it'll be amp-level rather than line-level, and you may have impedance problems).

This might be a stupid question, but does it have mini or rca outs? If so, adapters.

If you need to make outs, open it, decide on the outs that you want (1/4, mini, rca, etc), get a cable, cut off an end and solder it to the speaker wires. Of course, two cables or a stereo cable if it's a stereo unit.
That'll do the job.

...next caller, you're on the air...

Internet says there's no headphone jack on it, so yeah, you'll have to remove the speaker and wire its leads into a jack. Still, pretty trivial to do.

Well, you can leave the speakers wired. He may want to use it by itself or use them as teensy weensy monitors. :P

Wouldn't you want to tap into the circuit before whatever is this thing's equivalent of a "power amp" in order to get a line-level signal?

Or is the amp in a keyboard like that so weak that it doesn't matter?
