Bent Knee

Tell me this isn't an insanely well-constructed, well-performed piece of neo-prog rock:

Bent Knee's "Leak Water"

Oh and here they are doing it acoustic in the snow:

Re: Streaming service that doesn't use so much dynamic compression?

I don't know if it's still the case, but Beats headphones had a reputation for "sounding good" solely by virtue of the internally applying some EQ to boost "pleasing" frequencies. I can't find a good reference doc about it so maybe that was either never true or isn't true anymor...

Re: Streaming service that doesn't use so much dynamic compression?

Okay I did some testing and it's not Spotify. You guys are right. It's Windows 10 and/or the Dell hardware of my office desktop. There's some sort of EQ and compression happening in the audio settings. I've turned off every setting I can find on the "Realtek Audio" device settings and it s...

Re: Streaming service that doesn't use so much dynamic compression?

Yeah the loudness wars and all. It could just be that new masters of everything are bit-crushed to death. And here's naive old-man me who hasn't seriously upgraded his music collection since the great Napster Binge of 1998 just realizing that you can't get a digital file with any dynamic range anymo...

Streaming service that doesn't use so much dynamic compression?

I've become quite addicted to Spotify recently, but it's killing me that all the tracks are so compressed. I don't mean file-size lossy compressed (my ears aren't sharp enough to care about that) but good old dynamic range compressed. I'm not sure why I've developed a distaste for compression. Maybe...

Re: Don't get pricked (Porcupine prefight)

Very excited to hear Hostess Mostess again! I was just re-listening to the Between The Rain fight. They had one of my favorite SF tracks ever in that fight. Hey, that's pretty vintage. It's always fun to remember what my life was like when I recorded the oldies. That classical guitar smashed shortl...

Re: Don't get pricked (Porcupine prefight)

So sorry! We had it ready to go and I just spaced and missed the deadline. I just remembered I had pimped it here so I came back to say something. I am beyond humbled that anyone noticed its absence.

I'll put it up somewhere and link to it here when I get to it...

Re: How to metal?

Not that it matters really, but it's my daughter. She loves Joan Jett and she's been kind of fascinated by 80s rock. She doesn't really care about genre so she says things like "I want it to sound like Pink Floyd but more metal, like Poison." We've been listening to various stuff. She like...

How to metal?

So my 12yo wants to record an 80's punk/metal album with me this summer. I'm doing some listening to pick up some of the recording/production tricks. I grew up with this stuff but am listening to it with very different ears as an adult who knows things about recording. Here are things I've noticed. ...

Enough With the Rhythmic Master Compression!

Can someone with industry ties please pass this humble request along? If you are compressing the final mix so the kick drum triggers the volume to quickly drop and then ramp back up over 300 or 400ms: STOP IT! I hate it. It hurts my ears. I get that it kind of simulates being in a club or something ...

Drums advice for a newbie

So my better half, the hostess to my mostess, got me drum lessons for Father's Day and I have been enjoying the whole thing greatly! I love that first, steep part of the learning curve! Every time I practice I get noticeably better and I'm getting hooked on having a teacher who points out the best t...

The Weepies

The Weepies. Massachusetts-based folk/pop duo. Boy/girl/guitar. She's like a less cynical Shawn Colvin and he's like a less wooden Captain to her Tennille. They write songs by the book and nail it each time. I'm running through their 2010 "By My Thrill" album right now. It gets a bit tires...

Re: Mostess writes a song

We woke up early and had a final listen and hated the sound of it. We have learned over time to always sleep on it and hold off on the submitting until the last minute. Regret sucks. So we opened it back up in Logic and jiggered the lead vocals effects settings to make the delay less intrusive and t...

Re: Mostess writes a song

My goodness the deadline is tomorrow morning? Alright. The kids are in bed, the wife is watching TV, I can sneak upstairs and record some vocals. One track: it took two takes. I wrote the lyrics quickly. They are nothing special but the capture the mood I was going for. It's actually a lot spookier ...

Yes our library is true awesomeness. Not just synth equipment and effects pedals, you can borrow metal detectors and lawn games and solar conversion kits and thermal leak detectors. Pretty great. We are doing no recording today but we've listened to the mix a few times on different speakers to come ...

Re: Mostess writes a song

Ah Saturday. You can always count on Saturday. I recorded some bass using the Korg bass sequencer box I borrowed from the library. That thing makes some funny noises but I kept it mostly normal bass tones. That was pretty cool. I added 2 acoustic guitar tracks to run through the whole song. The elec...

Re: Mostess writes a song

We have some melody! Not recorded yet, but we can sing along to the track in the car. Most of the words are mumble mumble, hunting for rhymes here and there and finding little word combinations that sound good in various places. We won't record vocals until we are ready. The middle parts, which we h...
