We are in. And we will be posting our progress in a Help and How To thread on this board.
Oh and anyone who writes a song about Superman will not get our vote.

Mostess writes a song
Just in case anyone finds this useful, we will present our writing and recording of "Stay In Your Lane" as it happens until the deadline. After reading the title, we spent a day or so humming some lines. We sat at the piano and picked out some minor key riff and settled on a general mood. ...

Annie 2014
We took the family to see the new Annie yesterday and I was amazed at how sucky the songwriting and audio work was. The dialogue was cute, the actors did a pretty great job, there were some really fun and some really touching moments. But the mix was awful. Even with good movie theater speakers the ...

Re: Jan 21, 2015
Hi Hoblit! Child #3 knocked me off the SongFight! wagon. April 2008 that was. I've managed to get a couple songs written and submitted since then but it takes some effort. Luckily, kids tend to grow up and become more independent and give their parents some extra free time. I see more SongFighting i...

"Stop Podcasting Yourself" is great.
The "Cracked" podcast is currently my favorite but sometimes I think they're spinning their wheels.

Fixing a guitar
Preface: I'm an incorrigible cheapskate, am in no way mechanical, and have never done anything this brave to an instrument before. But I finally fixed my electric guitar and I wish I'd done it 20 years ago. I've had a Peavey Falcon since 1986. It's basically a Strat clone for wankers: locking mechan...

Re: Songfight: The Rockening
If you ever play a game and can't, by game-rules alone, agree on the relative awesomeness of two Rockening bands one (or both) of which contain Hostess Mostess, we will happily participate in a Rockening SongFight to help resolve the matter for realsies. PM us here.

Unless you refrigerate it, that is. Leave a slice of cheddar out on the counter and it will get all oil-sweaty and slippery and soft.

Re: What's my next Mac-based recording software
If your laptop is so old and frail, why even upgrade to Mavericks? (BTW do not upgrade to Yosemite - I've had horrific performance issues on my 2011 Mac mini, which Mavericks ran great on. It runs great on my 2013 MacBook Pro though.) Old and frail is how we roll here in Middle-Aged, Middle-Western...

Re: What's my next Mac-based recording software
Well looky here!
1) Rename "Logic Express 9.0.0" as "Logic Express" in the Applications folder
2) Download the updater
3) Unzip and run it
4) Bring the world to tears by channeling astral-plane love with your musical genius
We have accomplished 1-3. So far.

Re: What's my next Mac-based recording software
I did zero research before posting this. You are welcome. :) I like recording in Logic. I have (had) Logic Express 9.0.0 which was running under Snow Leopard. When I "up"-graded to Maverick it warned me about some other apps that wouldn't work but it didn't mention Logic. Probably because ...

What's my next Mac-based recording software
Well how about that for a surprise when Maverick tells me (after the upgrade) that Logic 9.0.0 will no longer work! What's next for Hostess Mostess? Something free? Or at least cheap? And not loop-based (we don't do the FruityLoops or the Abelton stuff...or should we?!) And quick? It can be complica...

Mostess does Lehrer in Ann Arbor this October
If you are in the greater Detroit area in October, schlep out to Ann Arbor to see Mostess in "Tom Foolery" on a Thursday evening. It's a 4-person musical revue of the work of Tom Lehrer, arguably the greatest American social/political satirist of the 20th century. It's racy, it's spicy, it...

Re: You'll receive your reviews on Monday...
Hi I'm Mostess and I haven't been here in a long time but SF and I go way back. I'm grumpy and I've had some wine so take your lumps like a man and don't complain that you intended for your song to be boring or ugly or dumb because I don't really give a crap. You are a good person and you wrote a fi...

Re: You'll receive your reviews on Monday...
hostess mostess great melody, songwriting and vocals. getting some distortion on the vocal, careful--the songwriting is too good to be betrayed by shoddy production! watch some youtube videos on how to master (that's what i did for garage band, and i think i got a pretty distortion-free mix this we...

Re: Hoping for a Better Tuesday, or a Butter Wednesday...
I'm in. The title was too brooding and moody to ignore.
Super lo-fi: just me and my laptop built-in mic. Enjoy the x-treme clipping!
Crazy ugly with the compression and EQ to compensate for the thoughtless mic job.
First entry in years, I think? Welcome back, Kotter.

We're not in for this one, but the title reminded me that when Sade sang "quiet storm" in "Sweetest Taboo" I always heard it as "croissant" which never made sense but it sounded delicious.

Hostess Mostess has temporarily taken up residence in the Chapel Hill area. If there are any SongFight!ers around here, PM me and we can maybe get some coffee and play some tunes.

Re: What is the hardest song to ruin?
Shenandoah.
You can't ruin it. It's like a diamond. Tom Leherer said "the reason most folk songs are so atrocious is that they were written by the people" but this is the exception that proves the rule.
