Re: 4/18/15 Bruce Springsteen

Gotta be Backstreets and Somewhere in the Night and of course The River for me. I can't seem to warm up to his new stuff, still the guy is a great live act.

Re: FAWM 2015

I only was able to do 12 songs, but it was my first FAWM, and I am quite pleased with the experience. Well worth the effort and lack of sleep for a month.

Yea, I'm in too. My first time. A good challenge to kick-start my writing again.

Re: All The Reviews I Ever Needed

jb - Many thanks for the review!
Regarding the phase effect - I double-checked all my settings and there is no phase effect anywhere on that song, BUT I did have a stereo widener effect on. That was the culprit! Important lesson learned!

Re: All The Reviews I Ever Needed

I figured there was no commercial gain in this venture (you know, personal usage only rules apply) and so ANYTHING was fair game. I can give it another shot now that I know your hurdle. Later Edit: After doing alittle reading on the subject, I see that using the image on the web is basically conside...

Re: Two different songs!

BLT - Many thanks!! Good advice and useful info!!. I think I need to look into getting some of those open back headphones. It looks like a good compromise, as my wife wouldn't be too enthusiastic about me playing my song 40 times while I'm mixing on studio monitors. I'm pressing my luck with her now...

Re: RIP Robin Williams

I grew up watching Mork & Mindy. One of the funniest guys I've ever seen. When he was on a late night talk show, I'd always stay up to watch him. A real loss.

Re: Two different songs!

Lunkhead - many thanks for the feedback! So the headphones are not necessarily a good thing to judge the mix by? In your opinion, is this balance of outputs as jb and Jon mention my best bet at this point? My current options of headphones and laptop speakers seem like terribly flawed options, if I r...

Re: To touch bass or not

Thanks for the all the input! I got a Squier Vintage Modified 70s Jazz Bass, and have been pretty happy with it so far. Bass guitar is a bit of a new world for me, get the groove down and everything, but not all that different from guitar in theory. It's a heck of a lot easier that playing the compu...

Re: Two different songs!

Okay, this is really great info!! I appreciate the feedback. Unfortunately, based on your comments I now think my latest song offering is f -ed up, because it sounded great on the laptop, but terribly unbalanced with the headphones. Really, it looks like (as you say) I need to go back and find an ap...

Making a mix sound good on multiple speaker types

Who knew this could get so complicated? Okay, I don't have studio speakers, so mixing is like a circus for me. I have been mostly using the laptop speakers for mixing to get a sense of how things will sound under "normal" conditions, but when I put the headphones on its like a horse of a d...

Re: UPDATED: All you need is to write a song (pre-fight)

I wrote something for this challenge, but damn it, it turned out to a cheesy acoustic pop love song. I really want to put bass and drums in but they don't seem to go, so far. How the hell does that happen!? I guess I have go the way the song leads me. Maybe I'll enter a fast punk ditty under a diffe...

Re: Not suitable for vampires (Harsh Light of Day reviews)

jb - Many thanks for the helpful advice! jast - My bad. Thanks for the clarification. That's useful. The next song mix I will effort to be a bit more nuanced and less "crammed in your face". While sonically the song may not be too successful, I've gotten some really good advice in my "...

Re: Not suitable for vampires (Harsh Light of Day reviews)

Jast and WreckDoM - I appreciate your reviews and commentary. However, the horrible almost unlistenable voice "mix" you note may be my quite intentional bullhorn effect I put on verse 2 and bridge vocals. Perhaps, my intention didn't go far enough in offering a dramatic "harsh" c...

Re: It Might Get Loud

jast - Yea, that anti-volmax video really strikes me, and is very effective. I totally see it. My mixing has a ways to go and it seems like I'm really scrambling to assimilate a lot of information in a very short time, but things like this stand out in my mind and are well worth remembering. Many th...

Re: It Might Get Loud

BLT - Yea, I noticed that too, when I tried what you suggested. While I eliminated it from the mixing phase, I found a little Limiter in the mastering was kinda useful to contain things. Still, it is a far cry from what I was doing. And it sounds better too IMHO.

Re: It Might Get Loud

Jast and BLT - Many thanks for the advise!! I spent some time last night and this morning remixing, getting rid of the Master Limiter, reducing compression where it seemed excessive and carving out space (as suggested) for each part in the mix. Wow, what a difference! It's much clearer and even a bi...
