Re: Nur Ein XIV Round Six "You Too"

Well, we recorded Monday so this is a little out of date, but here's The New Ugly! The editing and production isn't as tight as I'm away from home.

Re: Deals On Gear and Software

Just to put a bow on this - because it's very confusing!! - Maschine hardware is not on sale, and it's being advertised and sold as "bundles" - however, it's the standard price of the hardware + discounted software. So you don't have to buy the "bundle" and it may be advantageous (license-wise) not ...

Re: Songwriting competition judging mechanisms

I had envisioned a system where you upload your mp3 to to whatever music contest site, and it runs some LUFS analysis software on it and based on what it discovers either accepts, rejects, or offers to "fix" it. Yeah, I'm looking at ffmpeg for exactly that and some other related purposes at this ve...

Re: Songwriting competition judging mechanisms

I think "easiest" may not be the right word here. You might want to consider tackling low hanging fruit like id3 tag normalization before you set your sights on loudness normalization. I do think it would be cool though. You know what else would be cool? Artist accounts and mp3 uploads. I wasn't ev...

Re: Songwriting competition judging mechanisms

I don't think that would really changes things much, From what I’ve seen in judging, yes, certain judges are affected differently and this year I think a lot of songs rode past-or got cut- on mastering. I think that’s part of the beautiful game that makes everything a little more random. But if you...

Re: Songwriting competition judging mechanisms

Not to be a downer, but what’s different about this time we all think of ideas that take effort to implement? Honestly, if the goal is to have somewhat understandable Nur Ein rankings, the easiest thing to do is ban mastering and normalize all of the tracks before handing them to the judges. If the ...

Re: Deals On Gear and Software

"the more you buy the more you save" mindset anyway. It's a heritable disease. what do you want the additional hardware for? If you already have a keyboard controller you're happy with I don't think the A-series would be a significant improvement. Honestly, I was looking at studio control surfaces ...

if you want to throw some overpriced-but-good hardware Ok, so it looks like they have hardware I can get for only a little bit more... why not go broke? Which one do I want? (lol wtf I'm going to end up with collector's at this rate...) I can get: Komplete Kontrol A25 for $0 Maschine Jam for $65 Ma...

Re: Best vocal recording mic in the $300-500 range?

So I think we're all discussing relatively "general use" microphones so far. Are there any specialty ones that do significant coloring that might be "fun" to play with once in a while, but aren't appropriate all the time?

Re: What would you ask a songwriter about a song?

These are questions that can be applied to a particular song or in general. How many tracks do you have in your DAW? What does your DAW project look like? I want screenshots and photos. Do you organize or order your tracks in specific ways? Are there any unique workflows you take to help manage them...

Komplete Kontrol MIDI controllers
They look pretty sweet and I did think about it, but a) they're not wireless 8-) and b) I don't really need a keyboard that can output real audio. :) Maybe someday.

I do have to say, I'm kind of blown away by how good the symphony samples sound so far.

The New Ugly for this round is live Special thanks to Scott (Lucky Spoon) for subbing in for Ben. These are the approximate times. I apologize for being so LOW ENERGY. As you can imagine, I'm tired and grumpy and don't have much but praise at this point. :) Scott had plenty of interesting things to...

Re: Deals On Gear and Software

The biggest selling points for me in Ultimate: Razor - there's just something about additive synthesis that I like All the other drummer packages - again, only really relevant if you're short on good-sounding drums Symphony Essentials - if you don't have symphonic instruments at all, this is a good...

Grumpy: I listened to this a couple more times than usual, to see if I could crystallize how I feel about your vocals. Oof, not my best work to critique vocals on, but I'm glad your comments are less about my rushed performance (with ugly timbre) and more about something I can look into! I feel lik...

When I say "nobody" it's just hyperbole. I'm sure some people need it, but most people will just be spending money to spend money.

I assume the mark-up on the wheels for it are almost 100% profit. And that screen, nobody needs that, but a hell of a lot of people are going to get it.

Re: Logic and That Apple keynote

I have nothing to say about Logic, but I thought the maximum specs of the Mac Pro were absolutely insane. I think they'll find a lot of rich people willing to throw away "just another $1k" on this computer.

The biggest selling points for me in Ultimate: Awesome, I'll have to take a look at those on their website. Thanks for so much effort put into your response. It'd be great if they just linked to the things and said "this is what you care about", but confusing me is a good sales strategy. So there's...

Re: Deals On Gear and Software

Yeah, I just don’t know if I want any of that stuff because they have a ridiculous amount of nebulous “expansions” and indescript product names. It seems they make a lot of kitschy products to maximize their revenue. So, I think the upgrade to Komplete regular is an obvious win (especially if this $...
