Re: Nur Ein XIII Round One "Internet Sensation"

Merisan—Vocals and production are great. I feel like it is in need of an exuberant chorus, though. Cavedwellers—Not up my alley. The production and mix are really good, however. DJ Ranger Den—It’s funny and works wonderfully as a novelty. Not something I’d want to listen to a lot, though. Grumpy Mik...

Re: New album!

I'm listening to this right now. It's as if you drilled into my brain to find out what music I liked best, and then set out to make an album of it. I love it.

HeuristicsInc wrote:Lichen - are you using a tracker program? I feel like this music is less random than last time. I like the bassline.

Not exactly. I use a program called MuseScore to write the notes as sheet music, and then I export the individual tracks to Ardour to record the vocal and mix.

Re: Nur Ein XIII Round Zero "Trial By Fire"

BMac—The vocal siren is funny, but it sounds good, too. This is a well written song. The bare-bones production makes it seem a little thin. I like it, though. Berkeley Social Scene—I really like the bass line. This is fun. I’m not wild about the sound of the chorus (but do like “warm up the amplifie...

Re: Who's Gonna Win? (Guessing Game Reviews)

Far North Daylight—Nice opening. The vocal sounds more distant than the guitar, which is not ideal. The song, however, is good. I’d like more of a climax at the end of the chorus (“follow me home”), and the additional instrument should have come in sooner. Nevertheless, this is an enjoyable song tha...

Trial by Fire by Lichen Throat Summertime’s coming, and I need a job, Something outside, away from the urban mob. See an ad from the Forest Service; Job looks fun, but it makes me nervous. Re: And the answer is ... (Guessing Game prefight)

I'm not late this time.

I am, however, continually amazed that I can write a brand new song, which no one has ever heard before, and immediately sound like I'm singing it wrong.

Re: You can see quite clearly from up here (Black Mountain Reviews)

Bridger—Very nice mix. All the instruments sound good, as does the vocal. The verses are more interesting than the chorus. This reminds me, just a little, of a band called Split Single (which I really like, but which no one else seems to have heard of). Good work. dark side of the attic—I have to ad...

Re: You can see quite clearly from up here (Black Mountain Reviews)

I will say that you gotta figure out a place or time where you can sing louder. It's very Songfight to sound like you're trying not to disturb mom in the next room. Aside from making me laugh, you have a good point here. When I was recording this, I was torn between trying to make it sound sad and ...

Black Mountain

Black Mountain by Lichen Throat Hillsides glimmer in the dark of the night From the fires of the moonshine stills. I spent all day breathing anthracite At the back of a six-inch drill. I went underground while the dawn was just A wish in the eastern sky. I’m covered from head to boots with dust, An...

Re: An unearthly place (Black Mountain prefight)

I somehow permanently deleted almost all of my audio files from the last year this morning, so all I had to work with was a demo mp3 version of the instrumental portion of this week's entry. This situation didn't do the mix any favors.

Re: You Learned To Like It When (You Stopped Fighting Reviews)

Berkeley Social Scene—I’m digging the guitar tone, and I like the left/right separation in the mix. I can’t quite figure out what the lyrics are about. Good song overall. Bridger—Well crafted, except that the transition from the intro to the first verse is a little jarring. The synthy stuff works we...

Re: Can you see through the spam for the (X-Ray Specs Reviews)

Lots of great choruses this week. 2 guitars and a bass live—The Superman stuff was funny. The emphasis seems to be more on the spoken-word elements than on the music, so it’s hard to comment effectively on the music. Jonathan Mann—The songwriting here is excellent. The chords on the “Take out the ga...
