The Strong Button

The Strong Button by Lichen Throat One last day, until you leave here. I begged you then, “Don’t volunteer.” Gone, gone away, to the colony. Don’t cry when I’m left in agony. Drifting through the stars, Will you think of me? When you set your foot on Mars, Where will I be? I still wear The sweater ...

Re: Lieutenant Minor Wants To See (Major Arcana reviews)

add—Very well done. Too languid for my tastes, but all the individual components sound good, as does the mix. (The mix is perfect, actually.) Berkeley Social Scene—I’m not sure what to make of this, since it checks all the boxes for me to like it, but somehow it doesn’t quite come together. I do dig...

I would like to participate. I'm not available at all during the last two weeks of July, so I'm not sure if the timing will work out.

Major Arcana

Major Arcana by Lichen Throat Never heard of it until I was 11, Lowrey’s article in issue 77. Asked a fortune teller at the county fair “Where’d you get those cards?”, but she wouldn’t tell me where. Major arcana, deal me the Empress, Or if not that, how about some Justice? A few years later, I wen...

I'm in with a song in honor of Scott Hutchison, the recently deceased leader of Frightened Rabbit.

Re: Crack in the Wall

Crack in the Wall by Lichen Throat for Scott Hutchison I bought a house in Edinburgh In the shadow of the Forth Road Bridge. Got venetian blinds in a shade of purple, New rugs, and a second-hand fridge. Slopped tar on the roof to fix the leaks, And I set new tiles in the hall. But the one thing tha...

Re: Nur Ein XIII Round One "Internet Sensation"

Merisan—Vocals and production are great. I feel like it is in need of an exuberant chorus, though. Cavedwellers—Not up my alley. The production and mix are really good, however. DJ Ranger Den—It’s funny and works wonderfully as a novelty. Not something I’d want to listen to a lot, though. Grumpy Mik...

I'm listening to this right now. It's as if you drilled into my brain to find out what music I liked best, and then set out to make an album of it. I love it.

HeuristicsInc wrote:Lichen - are you using a tracker program? I feel like this music is less random than last time. I like the bassline.

Not exactly. I use a program called MuseScore to write the notes as sheet music, and then I export the individual tracks to Ardour to record the vocal and mix.

Re: Nur Ein XIII Round Zero "Trial By Fire"

BMac—The vocal siren is funny, but it sounds good, too. This is a well written song. The bare-bones production makes it seem a little thin. I like it, though. Berkeley Social Scene—I really like the bass line. This is fun. I’m not wild about the sound of the chorus (but do like “warm up the amplifie...

Re: Who's Gonna Win? (Guessing Game Reviews)

Far North Daylight—Nice opening. The vocal sounds more distant than the guitar, which is not ideal. The song, however, is good. I’d like more of a climax at the end of the chorus (“follow me home”), and the additional instrument should have come in sooner. Nevertheless, this is an enjoyable song tha...

I'm not late this time.

I am, however, continually amazed that I can write a brand new song, which no one has ever heard before, and immediately sound like I'm singing it wrong.

Re: You can see quite clearly from up here (Black Mountain Reviews)

Bridger—Very nice mix. All the instruments sound good, as does the vocal. The verses are more interesting than the chorus. This reminds me, just a little, of a band called Split Single (which I really like, but which no one else seems to have heard of). Good work. dark side of the attic—I have to ad...

Re: You can see quite clearly from up here (Black Mountain Reviews)

I will say that you gotta figure out a place or time where you can sing louder. It's very Songfight to sound like you're trying not to disturb mom in the next room. Aside from making me laugh, you have a good point here. When I was recording this, I was torn between trying to make it sound sad and ...

Black Mountain by Lichen Throat Hillsides glimmer in the dark of the night From the fires of the moonshine stills. I spent all day breathing anthracite At the back of a six-inch drill. I went underground while the dawn was just A wish in the eastern sky. I’m covered from head to boots with dust, An...
