Re: Song Fight! Live 2019: Curds & Chords (Madison WI US 8/2-8/3)

30-45 minutes is a lot longer than a typical SFL set, but anyway I have a lot of songs memorized. :P My main limiting factor is pain, not material.

Re: Song Fight! Live 2019: Curds & Chords (Madison WI US 8/2-8/3)

I’m starting to put together a set list. Any idea how long to target? Seems like we’re going to have longer sets than usual this year.

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

Ah, good point. I've noticed a lot of consumer electronics amps actually show their volume level in terms of attenuation, so when you have the amp at its (rated) peak level it's +0.0dB, if you have it 1/10 of the power it's -10dB, etc., and I guess that's how guitar amps' volumes work too -- the pre...

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

Okay, so basically gain is on the pre-amp and volume is on the power-amp, and in a perfect signal chain they'd be equivalent, but amps aren't perfect so you get different sorts of overdrive and clipping based on which signal is being cranked up. Good to know! Yes. And unlike the pre-amp, which we o...

Okay so, what's the difference between gain and volume, in this context? I thought they were synonyms for signal level being crammed into the amplifier.

Yeah from a brief skim I wasn't sure how this was any better than using rhymezone.com and the dictionary/thesaurus built in to macOS.

Ah yeah the PO-20 Arcade is pretty neat. I've purposefully avoided ever going to the local Teenage Engineering-affiliated synth shop because I don't think my wallet would survive the journey.

Re: Finishing "No Memory" by Merisan

I didn't listen to the original either so this is a fresh listen. I agree with JB that the kick drum is a bit too loud. I'd also recommend boosting Erin a little and also notching the EQ of the instruments around her voice a bit more. I think the vocal tone matches the instrumentation pretty well, o...

Re: Deals On Gear and Software

The 990 is a good starter mic, yeah! That's the first condenser I bought (also on a stupid deal of the day, back in 2005 right after I'd just moved to Seattle). The shockmount isn't all that effective although I guess it doesn't hurt. For reference, that's the mic that I recorded Octothorpe's "Eleme...

Glossary of terms used in my song, in alphabetical order. Since we don't have content warnings or spoiler tags I'll put this in a blockquote to make it visually distinct. Ace: Shorthand for "asexual;" someone who doesn't feel sexual attraction to others. They may or may not have a libido, and they m...

Re: Vocal level automation

"Multiple iterations of EQ" seems like someone's doing a bunch of voodoo without thinking about the math or physics of what an EQ actually is. Unless those are separate single-band EQs or he has a *very* specific parametric curve to fit, there is absolutely no reason to chain more than one EQ in a r...

I was planning on ending my set with a cover of Brother Machine's "Space Cadet." But I could move that into a tribute set if we're going to do it as a dedicated thing.

Ooh, I’ve never tried that one but it wouldn’t surprise me if that were a Privia action. Seems like it might be a pretty good choice yeah!

The reviews I’ve found on YouTube are promising. And yeah it seems like it’s a Privia with less user interface.

Haha, thanks, sorry to be, um, prickly.

Anyway EIEBC idea: there are three disparate species all called "porcupine," and folks are also often confused about porcupines' relation to hedgehogs (there is none). Maybe this could become a thing.

Or not. I dunno.

Okay I ended up booking a room at the Holiday Inn West Madison from 7/31 - 8/5. It has two beds. If someone wants to split the room with me, please let me know. It'll be $92/night for whomever takes it.
