Re: I Hope You Get A"round" to your (Square States Reviews)

Big batch of songs this time! I meant to go to bed an hour ago, so I'm sorry to anyone who may have fallen victim to me getting tired and either less discerning, less diplomatic, or less eloquent. Sparetooth : I'm a big Big Thief fan, so I perked up when you mentioned making a reference to them in t...

Re: I Write Them Every Hundred Years (The Return of the Century Reviews)

Ric Hair : I think this performance needs to be tighter to get your song across. I think the vocal hook is pretty catchy, but the performance is messy, so it all sounds really scattered, like none of the instruments are following the same key or rhythm. The trippy breakdown is cool! I kind of feel ...

Re: Red Warrior Needs Food Badly (The Strong Button Reviews)

Rizzle Mosquizzle : Nice work, good beat, good delivery. I feel like the vocals get drowned out just enough a lot of the time that I can't really make out a lot of the lyrics well, which is a shame since I couldn't check in the lyrics thread for them either and I think I was probably missing some c...

Re: Lieutenant Minor Wants To See (Major Arcana reviews)

add: [depending on your feelings about this song,] I deeply apologize for what I am about to say, but this reminds me of "Smooth" by Santana ft. Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20. It's the vocal melody/rhythms, I think. OK, now that that's out of the way... I like the arrangement and production a lot, the ...

Re: Get out the tweezers for the (Bad Teenage Mustache Reviews)

Oh I didn't mean the actual words, the half-rhyme with the plosives absolutely works totally fine for me! I just meant the actual distance in the song, in terms of time--the rhyme scheme is A B C D - E F C D (and since "mustache" is the same in both I don't really count it). My subconscious was wait...

Re: Get out the tweezers for the (Bad Teenage Mustache Reviews)

The Shanks --I love this, I love the juxtaposition of the filthy swaggery guitars and the kind of goofy tough-guy lyrics, perfect embodiment of the prompt. I kept thinking the lyrics were "super small mustache" till I looked in the lyrics thread :) Pigfarmer Jr. --The lyrics are funny and subtle, r...

Re: Time To Pick Up (Your Discarded Cigarette Reviews)

Nick Soma + Cookie Blue: This is really lovely and sweet, reminds me of the Pastels with the kind of languid arrangement and naive, melancholy vocal. I like the mix of the shimmery guitar arpeggios and subdued piano accents, especially the high bright parts between vocal parts. Pepper Jane: Very nic...

Re: Who's Gonna Win? (Guessing Game Reviews)

Lichen Throat: I quite like the instrumental, it's got a clear drive and focus. The lyrics paint a wonderful story, clear and weird and fascinating, although I thought throwing in the "Evelyn" rhyme felt a little lazy, like you couldn't think of a better rhyme for "loony bin" so you played a proper...

Our local arts and culture site, Tone Madison, ran a writeup today for my IRL band's upcoming CD release show, including a song debut for one of the songs from our upcoming album that's coming out on the 12th! I made a video for it--link below or in the article.

Pigfarmer Jr.: I like the rhythm guitar and drums a lot, I think they have a really great energy! I wish the level didn't dip down once the vocals come in, the vocals are well performed but feel too loud to me. The dynamic shift in the solo is interesting and I don't quite know how I feel about it!...

Ha! Dang, I went looking for the offended party on the forums and couldn't find the post in question. Liz Phair is not universally loved, that's for sure. I love her and I could still see myself getting somewhat offended by the comparison under certain circumstances. I haven't been to any SF meetups...
