Re: New Music Friday - 3/22/19

I moved on to the new Lambchop album which has a surprising amount of autotuney / vocodey vocal FX! But in a good way! I'll definitely be returning to this one.

Old Hampshire! The one in England. But I still feel the cosmic link.

Re: No escape from the reality of (Is This Real Life Reviews)

Excellent fight! Really enjoyed most of these tracks, but to be more specific: Tim Hinkle - your bassy vocals sound great (and suitably operatic) here and I really like the quick mandolin (?) picking. The song overall is enjoyable but quite low-key, I feel like in an opera it would be setting up the...

Re: New Music Friday - 3/22/19

I checked out the new Apparat album. I really love one that he did a few years ago, 'Walls', but this new one felt a little one-note, and that one-note is "relentlessly dour" so... I think that's a thumbs down from me.

Re: A support group for (The Dream Crusher Reviews)

Just listened to the drumless version and I think it does sound better for this song. The timing issues are less obvious and it really puts the focus on the lyrics, which are some of my favourites.

Re: A support group for (The Dream Crusher Reviews)

Excellent podcast, it was really interesting to hear some of the behind-the-scenes stuff (about Song Fight and BSS) from Sam. Also excellent work on posting it just before I left work for the day so I could play (some of) it in the car on the way home! Following your more in-depth investigation, I r...

Re: New Music Friday - 3/15/19

The Stephen Malkmus album is odd. It starts out like he's really going all-out on trying something different, but slowly morphs into sounding like all his other stuff. As much as I like his usual sound, I kinda wish he'd stuck to making this one a weird synth record, as it is it feels like an experi...

Re: A support group for (The Dream Crusher Reviews)

I'm going to sound like a right misery after mc3p0's delicious enthusiasm there. But here I go anyway! Sorry everyone! Berkeley Social Scene - good vocals, good musicianship, like the synths. I really, really don't like the rhythm guitar sound though - I'm sure this is partly (mostly) genre bias but...

Excellent reviews, Micah! Always enjoy your analysis (another guest spot on the podcast soon please?) I've been writing apocalyptic songs almost as long as I've been writing songs, possibly starting with this one, which I think I wrote in 2003: https://lardpony.bandcamp.com/track/post-apocalyptic-lo...

Re: New Music Friday - 3/8/19

I checked out the new M83 album, which is the soundtrack to a European horror film. M83 doing horror soundtrack music sounded like a good recipe to me, but most of it is pretty forgettable. Kinda curious about the Meat Puppets releasing their first new album in 20+ years, although I've only ever bee...

Re: Make Some Noise With Your (Silent Advance Reviews)

I was going to say the same thing about Alice. Excellent points about the bird aliens too, I hadn’t actually considered their appearance but the swooping lyric DOES imply a birdlke quality! I hadn’t considered that it might accidentally have fallen into the Gleebleverse, either... The “shape in the ...

Re: Make Some Noise With Your (Silent Advance Reviews)

Whoa, no BSS? No Third Cat? Crazy times. Good fight, though! Cody Walker Jr - really like the sound here, the insistent synth bass and the vocoded vocal work really well. The filter sweeping later on is really effective, too. Just kinda feels like it needs a little more going on to really stand out ...

Silent Advance by Vom Vorton there’s a shape in the sky it draws away when we come near and I never knew why it caused me so much fear until this morning when the contents were revealed and as soon as they opened their eyes we knew our fates were sealed we form a line we stand our ground but still ...
