Re: Cutting corners on your mix? (They Know reviews)

Berkeley Social Scene - this is the most frustrating BSS song that I've heard. I like the punky energy but the shift to the slow middle-8 and solo totally shoots it in the foot for me. If there was ever a BSS song that didn't need a solo, it's this one. The gang vocals at the end are great, in my F...

Re: Cutting corners on your mix? (They Know reviews)

I've been listening in the car today. Really interesting mix of songs, I love it when there's a good mix of guitars and synths and a few stranger entries. I'll write some reviews after a few more listens.

Re: Spintunes 15 Round 3 Challenge

Thanks thirdcat! Excellent work making the final! I thought I was doing a really good job with my song up until the point where I added the vocals, I just don't think I found a way to get the right level of RAWK into them and after a couple of takes it hurt too much to try again (which is probably a...

Re: Spintunes 15 Round 3 Challenge

Good Guy Sojabe - Ahab - this has to be one of the best takes on the challenge. If somebody had played this to me and said that it was Moby, I'd have totally accepted it. I like the downbeat vocals and general vibe. I may have missed something here. The only Moby album I'm really familiar with is '...

Re: Spintunes 15 Round 3 Challenge

I think this was the trickiest round yet in figuring out which songs did the best job of fulfilling the challenge while also being excellent songs in their own right. I mostly listened in my car again, in order to make sure that any subtleties and nuance were eradicated by the hum of sad engines. Br...

Re: Let's all work hard on (Nights And Weekends Reviews)

That was great fun. I'm quite glad I didn't get my song finished (or even started really) as it was going to be a lament for wasted nights and weekends where I partied TOO hard, and also I have not one ounce of funk in me. That said, I really liked the funkified theme tune and the funk version of Pa...

Silver Streak by Vom Vorton needed a vehicle at minimal cost to me knew it had to reach escape velocity bought it to get from A to B the occasional trip to the C considered a new ride leave the old one for dead but then I just got it cleaned instead clearing the peaks in a silver streak (x4) manual...

Re: Let's all work hard on (Nights And Weekends Reviews)

James Owens - the guitar riff kinda reminds me of Taxman by the Beatles? Which is quite appropriate for the workin'-man lyrics. I love the instrumental interlude bits, the way the synths glide in is beautiful. The song as a whole is not 100% up my street but only in a personal taste kinda way as I ...

Re: Spintunes 15 Round 3 Challenge

Sweet! Can't wait to hear that. I love 80s new wavey synthpop stuff! I figured that the safest way to ensure I was going way out of my standard sonic zone was to go heavy, so I'm aiming for stoner rock, with a particular focus on Californian cult rock legends Fu Manchu. I've been listening to them o...

Chumpy and Ryan's reviews will be on their podcast at https://twojerksonevote.com/ , as usual. If it's not there by the time this is posted, it will be soon. This is online now, in case anyone was waiting. I enjoyed hearing the jerks figure out my cat's name inspiration. She is indeed named after A...

Another enjoyable one! I think the weird percussion you reference must be the distorted drum loop thing I mentioned above. Guess that didn't really work out!

Re: I only work days, and (Nights and Weekends prefight)

I was hoping to get another late entry in but I don't think it's going to happen this time. I second the praise for this title, though. It inspired a lot of ideas in me that I've been too busy and/or exhausted to follow through on

Also really sorry about the 20 seconds of dead air- that was probs left over from when I took out the white noise. All around that was a bad idea... my bad for not checking so closely! Wrote some things! Glen Raphael - Work of the Programmers - I've been mostly listening on a burned CD-R in the car again and this is such a great opening track. I also give this high praise for having some of the most charming and impressive harmonies from the whole round AND as a programmer, this i...

Really good stuff. I'm listening in the car again and some of these are making me a bit emotional.

I'll write some reviews once I've listened a few more times.

Re: Tuning Vocals in Post

I don't tend to use any vocal tuning, mostly because I find the process so fiddly that I could probably do four or five more vocal takes in the time it would take to tune the first one, and by that point I'd probably have nailed it at least once (or as close as I ever get to nailing it, anyway). Alt...

Re: Let's all sit down and read (Poetry In The Streets Reviews)

Vom Vorton Whatever that weird clicky poppy percussive noise (I don't think it's the claps but something else?) is in the pre-chorus isn't really working for me either. It's the effected drum loop from the intro coming back in. A classic example of "this section isn't quite working but I'm out of t...

Re: Let's all sit down and read (Poetry In The Streets Reviews)

I burned these songs onto a CD for the car and so I have listened to them each one million times BUT for once I am not listening as I review. I am not sure how this will affect anything. Berkeley Social Scene - this is another solid BSS song but (and this probably isn't entirely fair) I couldn't hel...
