Re: Why rock the boat when you can dive in (Head First reviews)

All the robots : Great chorus; love the backup vox. Laughed out loud at "I came out head first." The implied head trauma in the last stanza is a stroke of genius. Mandibles : I'm a sucker for anything with rhodes. I wanted something more out of that chorus but those fuguing harmonies at t...

Re: Bottle Neck

Garrett Hardin passed away Hemlock on his breath That same earth that formed his clay, Ever so bereft, Follows him in death. Thomas Malthus' spacious earth, Norman Borlaug's bread, Every light that it gave birth, Soul in every head All now full of dread. Who do you love and who do you kill, Given th...

Re: hey listen to my new song (thread)

Here is a song just finished the other day called "After We Went Down" Holy Batman, deetak. That is some great singing right there. Compares favorably to the Andrew Bird CD that's been in my car stereo for a week now. On a different note, I finally (after three years) reopened TheWhiteHat...

Re: The 6th Annual Gift of Music

Don't feel any rush from my end. I'm an inveterate stiffer myself, having once stiffed GlennCase for over two years. As for the list's difficulty, I feel that only the jazz and sacred harp tunes were inherently difficult. Angeline Baker and Down the Road are relatively simple at their cores; the dif...

Re: hey listen to my new song (thread)

Here's a little valentine's day project I put out this morning. Three tracks including a Gilbert and Sullivan arrangement for the banjo, a brand new guitar rag, and a cover of Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" (OR IS IT?!?!?!). http://www.bfrank.org/thewhitehat/music/TWH/Valentine%202009...

Re: Review A Little Bit More (Love Me reviews)

I have total respect for people who can play real music on the theremin. It's crazy to think that back in their heyday there were theremin orchestras. They still manage to cobble the infrequent ensemble together though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjlwEuREAbI . Also: http://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Re: Review A Little Bit More (Love Me reviews)

Really? It's such a tired old argument, though. Every art movement thought the one that followed it was shit. Practically everybody thought Jackson Pollock was shit at the time, but just the other day I noticed that Google was celebrating his birthday. Art IS relative, one man's shit is another man...

Re: Review A Little Bit More (Love Me reviews)

And then there's group 3. The truly and unapologetically abysmal. The songs that showed no clear effort at all, or in some cases, even, a clear effort to be bad. Every fight tends to have one or two of these; this fight has nine, which even for a fight of record-breaking size, is far too many. Thes...

Re: Review A Little Bit More (Love Me reviews)

Alright, folks. Here goes. Generally a good fight. Very few entries seemed as if they were created to waste my time. Lots of songs that were good and a greater than 10% “I’d listen to this again” rate. The fact that I sat down and did these straight through comments not only on my social life, but a...

Re: Love Me A Little Bit More

Oh baby, stick with me and you don't got much to gain I'm 'bout as useful as a sinner can be You know I ain't got much in terms of muscle or fame But that don't bother you when you're loving me. And when I'm at my best, oh I can hardly compare to all those pinstripes down at the bank But if the only...

Re: The 6th Annual Gift of Music

bz£, I apologize for the latency, but I could not find the lyrics to this tune anywhere. I wrote an e-mail to the remaining members of the band, and they only got back to me today. So with wishes of health, wealth, and wisdom in the new year, I present you my belated arrangement of Missile Command, ...

Re: Holiday Songs

Five years ago, I submitted to the "Merry Christmas" fight. The emo quotient is far, far too great for me to link to it. Here's an arrangement of Auld Lang Syne that I recorded two years ago, though: http://music.metafilter.com/740/Auld-Lang-Syne

I'm out. Hard drive crash left me without so much as sound recorder. Luckily I found a fly-by-night operation to recover most of my data, but it looks like I'm going to have to go hunting for protools. Good luck, folks.

Acid Cadillac - I like the sound of your guitar. I really hate the compression/phasing you've got going there on the vox. Enough to not be able to listen to the rest of the song. Ah, cool. You got rid of it. Oh, here it comes again. Adam Adamant - Ah, that good old fat distorted bass. Reminds me of ...

Much obliged for the (mostly) good impressions so far.

Reviews to come later this week, but I have to say JT Henderson's entry this week is excellent. Found myself humming it walking to class today.
