jb, have you thought about adding http://www.lightningmp3.com (and maybe http://www.netfast.org) to the FAQ? I know this issue doesn't have much to do with songfighting, per se, but the question comes up a lot ...

Remaining somewhat on-topic: ;-) One of the stupidest arguments (and yet one of the most rational, in a strange way) for unquestioned faith is that "if science can't explain it, then that's proof of a god". Dawkins dispenses with this and related a priori arguments early in the book. He ha...

I listed those 3 specifically 'cause they're all less than $60. They're all about the same quality, too. Which is to say, like any budget condenser mic, they sound somewhat harsh, and sibilant if you're not careful. For you, between the 3 mics I listed, I say go with the Apex 435 (and note, I meant ...

From this thread : 6. You ARE NOT PERMITTED to link directly to your song on songfight.org (this has nothing to do with friend-flooding, and everything to do with get-your-own-damn-web-hosting-you-cheap-bastard). We don't currently do anything to enforce this, other than send you bad vibes and possi...

Re: New Beginnings

And as for voice recording equipment, I assume that I'm supposed to use something better than a standard $6 ventrilo mic, what can I get that won't set me back too much? I don't have much money to throw around. If you already have an audio interface for your computer (i.e. some way to connect a &qu...

Not that this is a thread for that debate, but I like to point it out wherever I can squeeze it in. Heh, it's actually on-topic, as Dawkins devotes a whole chapter ("What's wrong with religion? Why be so hostile?") to it. He takes the position that all religion is destructive (to science,...

The God Delusion

I'm not really in Dawkins' target audience for this book. I think he wrote The God Delusion mostly for quasi-agnostic half-believers (who I, and he, suspect make up most of the population.) Still, I found a couple of great eye-openers. I've always thought Dawkins rude (or to use his pet word, "...

BLT's suggestion is one possible approach, though there's a big caveat: Noise reduction is an ABSOLUTE last resort as a way to fix a recording. You should only use it when there's no way you can re-record the track. Further, the noise in Koushirou's sample is much more than just "light hiss&quo...

The noise is too broad to be fixed with EQ (i.e. there's more than one specific frequency in there .. so any EQ ducks you make will noticeably affect the tone of your recordings.) It sounds to me like RF interference from a CRT monitor through a poorly shielded pickup. Do you have a CRT monitor? If ...

I totally agree, Sober. Even if you want to sound amateur, nothing beats a pair of pro ears to help you do it right. and of course it turns into a minor bitch session about opinions. Like you said, this is Songfight! I guess we're all masochists :) Des, what's your process for sequenced/programmed/&...

Re: How to make your recordings more professional

I used Hydrogen on my entry for Glutton - what are your thoughts? It sounds good (though the drums could definitely be louder.) I'd humanize the velocity of the snare drum a bit more. The snare is the most consistent sound in your mix, and for realism, it should vary a good deal. I find a believabl...

Re: How to make your recordings more professional

Ya, exactly. With the exception of "Fake" drums, of course. Even the pros use "Fake" drums sometimes. More specifically, it's "obviously-programmed drums attempting to pass as live drums." Fake drums by themselves are fine (especially in electronic music.) But the heavi...

Heh. :) (Though FTR, I didn't actually say they're a "problem." Just that, in general, songs with these traits tend to sound amateur ... If amateur is what you're going for, great. But if you're specifically after a more professional sound, you'll get better results without mud and timing ...

How to make your recordings more professional

This is a bit of self promotion, but hopefully some Songfighters will find the information useful: http://www.hometracked.com/2006/12/22/10-hallmarks-of-amateur-recordings/ In short, there are (at least) 10 telltale signs that a recording was made by a novice: Too much bass Poor drum levels Clashing...

Heh heh, I can't tell if that's a dig at me for loving a bar band, or if you really enjoyed the show.

Either way, the album rocks. Chips Ahoy is probably the best song of the year.

Seriously awesome album, and, assuming you people have any taste, will no doubt be a repeat title in this thread. Agreed. Another vote for an inch apart. I never play the hats wide open, though. if someone wanted to hear the sounds that I'm getting out of the hat. Based on that, I'd say you want them closer together .. You never really get that nice tight "chick" sound Leaf described. (I know it's only a samp...
