I'm trying this thing that you can be part of if'n you want to

Hey, I'm sending out postcards via regular mail with a QR code to some piece music I've written. They're free, and basically just a fun thing to do. I plan to send one a month, and there will be a QR code on there to snap to hear the song. I'm starting by doing three of them, then we'll see if it's ...

The most sleeping people

I was just now lying here wondering about what time of day is the largest percentage of the human race awake, and I decided it is probably about 7 AM Pacific time, because then it is the middle of the night over the Pacific Ocean. In order to figure out when the most people are asleep would require ...

Re: Copyright musings

I think there is no good solution to this issue. The only solution will be for people to lighten up a LOT with regard to money and music. And that would require a big cultural shift, which I don't see happening. I'm not saying there should be NO copyright laws, but there is no such set of laws that ...

Re: Copyright musings

Wow that is just so infuriating. None of this is about music. It's about using music as a channel with which to make a buck. The old "If I can maybe make some money this way, to hell with anything else, because that is justification enough". This is another boldface list item why I'm so ve...

Re: Song Fight! Turns 20

You can be Dork 1 Dork 3 Dork 4 knock yourself out, Sam is just not going to number them for you. “To maximize Song Fight's resources for everyone who wants to participate, please only enter one song per fight!“ Sure it’s not technically enforceable, but it’s not ‘doing the right thing’. I would no...

Re: Copyright musings

John Cage's "4:33" contains four and a half minutes of complete silence. Does he own the copyright to silence? What if I released a digital cover of 4:33, and since it was produced digitally, it is truly silent. Now John Cage only owns the copyright to the silence in HIS recording of 4:33,...

Re: Song Fight! Turns 20

It would be possible to break the record if the restriction on multiple entries per participant were lifted. In fact, it could be a fight in which each participant were REQUIRED to submit at least 3 distinct songs to be eligible. And maybe a maximum length of one minute each.

Re: Copyright musings

Huh. How interesting. So technically, I could construct an entire percussion track which is built out of extremely short samples of copyrighted music, and unenforceable as it would be, I would technically be violating copyright laws. Or would that fall below the threshold for "legally cognizabl...

Copyright musings

I had a good friend who was a rock musician of some renown, and he explained to me that copyright laws only kick in after a certain length of a piece has been used, and it's different in different jurisdictions and context-specific, but typically there is a cutoff length under which one can legally ...

Why not get rid of rhymes altogether and really go to town? And while we're at it, who needs chords and melodies and stuff? All hail Dionysus!

Re: The MP3 Effect

In photography - The DSLR doesn't have digital zoom and that makes a lot of difference. That why most of my cellphone shots are not good. I thought this might happen, where people would chime in with their thing they are fine with the MP3 version of, followed by someone saying that no, that's the $...

Re: The MP3 Effect

Stouffer's lasagna is quite delicious. It's also got about 65000 times as much sodium and plastic particles and sugar. I can watch something worth watching on a phone if the reason it's worth watching is the screenplay. I can't even tell the difference between 320kbps and 192kbps. Or, well, if I can...

The MP3 Effect

I couldn't find an appropriate place to put this topic (didn't there used to be a "General Music" area? anyway...) So I know this isn't the place for it, but here goes... MP3's are a compressed file type that trades a small degradation in sound quality in favor of an enormous file storage ...

Re: I'm too lazy to be crazy in the (Hazy Holidays reviews)

I hear this is what the SF forums used to be like. More please. I admit I was a large participant in those contentious forums of yore, and an instigator of my fair share of contentions. I have often thought back aghastly at that edition of me and vow to be better should I ever come back. To be fair...

Re: I'm too lazy to be crazy in the (Hazy Holidays reviews)

Jim of Seattle, I feel your pain at the half rhymes and end rhymes, but I'm afraid I can't help myself. If it pains you, imagine the anguish (and glee) I must feel daily. Buckle up for Surprise Arizona I suppose. Try as I might, I have never made peace with half rhymes. Even innocuous ones like, sa...

We also have a dedicated thread for folks to post the lyrics for their songs for every fight. Here's the one for "Surprise, Arizona":

viewtopic.php?t=12578
I assumed that thread is for lyrics in songs that are actually entered.

Re: Where Gen X'ers are moving to (Surprise, Arizona prefight)

Hmm, very quickly put together! Not at all where I was going with the idea, but your way works too. Mine was to be about this strange small town trying to draw in tourists with these obscure attractions. I was just going to have a long list of them, was going to go more surreal. jsyk, I STILL don't ...
