I'll give it a B-. I had hoped it would be a little funnier.

Did you stay for the Ben Folds redo of his Rockin' the Suburbs? Now there's a shotglass of bile aimed at the people who just paid to watch your movie. Kinda Von Triers-esque. I dug that.

Da Vinci Code

Eesh. The critics are right this time. This is a hugely boring, talky, badly-written mess. It takes place in a fantasy world where there are absolutely no cameras or security officers guarding precious things. I just wish it would acknowledge this alternate-reality, because Paris and London seem rea...

The Nacho Libre trailers are totally awful, but I have to believe the actual movie will be better. I have little of this optimism for Cars, which has yet to provide a single laugh from its various trailers. I am more interested in Lady in the Water after its latest trailer and beautiful new poster. ...

Art School Confidential

Funny, and fairly consistently hits its easy targets. The murder subplot, which I thought would be completely inconsequential (a la Gosford Park) actually pays off pretty well. It loses its comedic bite maybe about halfway through (like Thank You for Smoking), but I was never bored. B

Mission: Impossible III

Whoa! So awesome! J.J. Abrams, I love your crazy seat-of-the-pants action style. I'm sorry I didn't watch Alias. I liked M:I 2 a lot too, and I know... I'm about the only one. But it was a lot better than the first, which was three action scenes, separated by boring plotting and Emilio Estevez. But ...

Yeah, I was like "Did I miss something?" with the hotel key, but when I realized I was asking that a lot, I kind of let it go. But it was very item-y. "I have a knife, I used it for something, and whoops!, I just dropped it down a chasm! Shaaaa-rooooon! SHAAAAAA-ROOOOOONNNNNN!!!"

Silent Hill gets a B+ for style and a D for story/acting. So, I guess it's a C. It has a kind of weird beauty, but it doesn't even try to make sense for those of us who haven't played the game. I like the ending, though.

Oh, nice! Now you've done it. Stick It is over in the corner crying its eyes out, Benchwarmers is throwing a fit, and we can't even find RV. I hope you're happy.

SUMMER MOVIE SEASON thread

So, summer movies are finally here! What, you don't like stunt people dressed like A-listers jumping out of spaceships while shooting at dinosaurs, but still finding time to chug a delicious and refreshing Bud Light? Heathen! Use this space to talk about summer movies you are looking forward to (Sup...

Friends with Money

This is funny and well-written and acted. It's pretty slight, and just sort of ends, but that kind of works here. Its 90-minute running time is one of its assets. The actresses are all lovely and amazing, and Frances McDormand's psuedo-gay husband is adorable. Plus, it has Draco Malfoy's dad! A-

Eh, I won't get into an argument here - it's just a matter of what type of humor appeals to you. I think this is funny: Andy's friend crawls along a hallway as if it's the desert and he's been there for weeks. He finds a potted cactus in the middle of the floor, pulls the top off and drinks the wate...

Andy Milonakis

So, I've more or less been dismissing Andy's show without having seen it, the way I do with 98% of that Adult Swim crap and most Dickens novels. And, while I'm not too worried that my opinion of 12oz Mouse or Bleak House is going to change, I was wrong about Mr. Milonakis. He's kind of brilliant, an...

You probably shouldn't see Running Scared, which was the most cursing I've heard in a while.

I give Inside Man a B. The across-the-board good acting helps make up for the weak-ish heist plot. At least when Spike Lee sells out, it's with some style.

The Wild

This has some of the most amazing character design I've ever seen. The lions are fantastic, and I like the giraffe too. The opening "storytime" animation is kickass, and there's a scene where the animals see downtown NYC for the first time that's beautiful. This is also, possibly barring a...

Tristram Shandy

Anybody down with the Coogan-y goodness? I thought it was consistently funny. Funnier that Thank You for Smoking as a whole, but I have a meta fetish, so that might skew things a little for me. I pretty consistently like Steve Coogan's work. He was easily the best thing about that wretched Around th...

I think it's funny that the preview totally tries to hide the fact that Frankie Muniz is in it, even though he's probably the film's most recognizable star. My guess is that they did some test market research, found out that not only is Malcolm not a draw to their target comsumers, he's something of...
