Re: New Music Friday - 7/12/19

OH! I've listened to this Purple Mountains album a few times and see it listed on a lot of best of 2019 lists. I totally missed that it is David Berman from Silver Jews!

Re: SoundCloud limiting free accounts to _15 tracks_!!

Okay so: Funkwhale looks great. It's self-hostable, federated/decentralized, and has an embed widget. Seems like it'd be easy enough for some of us to pool our resources and run an instance for the Song Fight! community. Plus you can use it for getting your own music library everywhere, which might...

Sampleson PUSH one button synthesizer is free: https://sampleson.com/push-synthesizer.html I picked up one of their other instruments (I think the Rhodes Bass) and have been on their mailing list ever since. They OFTEN have free instruments and big discounts on their products. Highly recommended in ...

Re: His Dark Materials

I watched some of the first episode but didn't get hooked. I read the books a while ago and vaguely remember I would start it out thinking, "meh" and then read the whole thing and get the next one. I may be having the same reaction to this adaptation.

Re: I was in the (Right Town, Wrong Address prefight)

I already played lentils and buckwheat last week in I Used To Know You Better! Two of my shakers are homemade using tiny Writer’s Tears whiskey bottles 3/4 filled with the aforementioned foods. I tried to use eggs, flour, and milk, and then realized the title wasn't I Used to Know you BATTER! Wha-w...

If my memory is correct, that car crash was at a different space called the Werepad. I think Ken Flagg hooked us up with them.

Re: ‘Decent’ cheap gear guides?

for acoustic I record with the MXL in the room a foot or two away, Yikes, and also YES! I tend to mic acoustic about 6 inches away with the mic pointed where the neck meets the body. I'd expect a mic a foot or two away to bring in a ton of the room sound, which could be totally awesome, or not - de...

Re: ‘Decent’ cheap gear guides?

Thanks for the clarification. There is tons of cheap gear out there, but I'd suggest buying fewer nicer things than amassing a crazy collection of okay. (I know this from experience.) Ujn's suggestion of MXL gear is a good one. I'm not much of a fan of Behringer, but it certainly is cheap and some o...

I haven't really fallen for a Battles record since Mirrored, which was amazing. I'll certainly check this out today and could be interested in seeing them, so hit me up when you hear about dates/tix.

Re: ‘Decent’ cheap gear guides?

I'm not really sure what you are asking. Are you looking for an audio interface - something to go between your mics and your computer? Are you looking for more microphones? All of the above?

Almost made it this week. Maybe I'll submit it late if I can find time (and the skill) to record the guitar solo and mix properly.

Pyle SM57 Copy

Hi All, Moving this conversation to a new thread. I recommended the PylePro PDMIC78 as a cheap and good sounding microphone. Below are a couple of quick clips I made so you can hear it on acoustic guitar and vocals. I tried to make an entry for this week's fight, but ran out of time. The acoustic gu...

Re: Ssssssssssssssssibilance

I highly recommend the PylePro PDMIC78 which sounds a lot like my transformer removed Shure Sm57 for cheap. Have you used it on many sound sources? Vox, acoustic, amps etc.,? I've mostly used it for guitar amps and vocals. It sounds good on both. I'm fairly sure it doesn't have a transformer, so th...

Re: Ssssssssssssssssibilance

...if you're recording with an SM57 :) (which I would think is a pretty decent mic for reducing these issues, although this guy suggests you can replace the transformer to improve it if you're into DIY. Personally, I'd try some other solutions first!) Not to hijack/sidetrack the conversation, but I...

Re: Ssssssssssssssssibilance

I find dynamic mics help to minimize sibilance. Cheap condenser mics makes it worse. There isn't much you can do if your voice is sibilant. Just keep trying different mics and positions until you find a way to minimize it.

Re: New Music Friday - 10/11/19

I'm excited to check out the new Mark Kozelek/Petra Haden album per your recommendation, ken. MK has been a mixed bag for me. I was a big Sun Kil Moon fan, I loved "Ghosts of the Great Highway" so much but it's much more traditionally structured. The forays into stream-of-consciousness raw diary mu...
