Re: You won't believe what happened next (Long Story Short Reviews)

Absolutely Credible -- Exciting textures. The vocal cuts like a razor through an abstract painting. I can't make out all the words. That's a habitual problem for me, not necessarily anything to worry about, but it means I can't review them. The composition is simple and effective. The melody is taut...

Re: I Used To Know You Better

If you ask me to find you something you need It might be a garden, it might be a seed If you ask, I might know just where to go But chances are it's gone If you ask me to take you by the best way It might be an hour, it might be a day If you ask, I might know just where to go But chances are it's go...

Re: Before you were famous (I Used to Know You Better prefight)

LADS! RECORDING WITH A REAL MICROPHONE IS GREAT! (Lads is gender neutral, btw. So say the Irish.) I agree. This is my first chance to try out my new AT2035, and I'm loving it. What a sweet mic. I'm also loving the optional synth arpeggio challenge, using the plugin that comes with Reaper. I've neve...

Re: Loudness management

Interesting technical discussion -- and one that wouldn't have occurred if nobody knew some submissions needed fixing. Having my lack of loudness management on display is a good thing, as far as I'm concerned. Otherwise how will I find out it needs improving? If a track isn't loud enough for you: 1....

(with chords, as someone suggested in the fight thread. Not clear how to format them properly on this BB, so I did what I could) We were G hoping for a world without exclusion, Where we could em- C brace our G differences, have our C cake and eat it Em too, and give Am some to C you We were G hoping...

Re: Would You Believe..... (Hope Against Hope Reviews)

Congrats to Possum sauce and Tom Skillman . Two pretty great songs.Keep it up. As requested by Owl , a stripped down version ( exactly the same without the lead guitar ) Anyone who wants to overtrack a lead line or two, feel free. I would love to hear a Jerkitorium , or Ryan cover version of this. ...

Re: Vocal level automation

I try to keep an eye on the levels as I'm singing. I hope one day to be able to deliver an even performance. Meanwhile, in the mixing phase, I almost always open the track volume envelope in the DAW and tweak individual phrases or words up or down. While I'm at it, I usually knock out the parts of t...

Re: My Life

The only question is what to say and how to say it... Seems an appropriate topic for discussion for some reason. And I still didn't get a song written. On the upside, I'm starting to use the studio to record the songs of musician friends. And I'm reading whole books of philosophy. And practicing my...

Re: A lyric generator

I feel like I want to seed this with the current SongFight title... That would probably get me writing again. I tend to work from the lyrics to the music, but by the time I come up with lyrics, the fight's over.

Re: Rode NT1A or Audio Technica AT2035 or . . .

I was able to give the Rode and the AT a side-by-side listen at the shop, using my preferred reference headphones (Sennheiser HD424). For my voice, the AT seemed clearer, so I went with that. The Rode was noticeably thicker in the bass, and it doesn't have a low-cut switch. When I got it home I comp...

Re: Rode NT1A or Audio Technica AT2035 or . . .

Thanks for the response curves. They reflect what the reviews say -- a bump for both at around 12 kHz, and a slight boost at around 100 Hz for the Rode. Although the curves are close, some say the Rode is more prone to sibilance. My choices are constrained because I'm using a Long & McQuade retireme...

Rode NT1A or Audio Technica AT2035 or . . .

I'm thinking of buying one of these mics for my studio, mostly for vocals but maybe for acoustic guitar as well. They're both popular with reviewers. Does anyone here have strong opinions about them, or alternative recommendations in the same price range?

Re: Nancy Pelosi For President! (Two Hits Reviews)

Having failed to produce reviews for this fight, I was planning to lurk in shameful silence, but the Jerks' extensive commentary prompts me to say someting about our entry (The Undead Squirrels). That doesn't mean I'm writing reviews. It turns out that the first few weeks of retirement are busier th...

Re: My Life

Thanks! I do hope to have more time for SongFight, although I'll be away from my studio in the summer. Now that I've spring-cleaned the basement and the retirement party and (most excellent) studio jam is over, maybe I'll start a blog. There is a long-standing problem in philosophy, the relation bet...

Re: What happens when you put six G-strings on a single guitar?

This reminded me of an instrument I encountered while on vacation in Bruges. http://harpmusic.nl/Lucvanlaere/#IMG_5455.JPG The tall apparatus at the back consists of seven pivoting wooden boxes: three in the upper tier, and four in the lower tier. Each wooden box has two playing sides, accessible by...

I'm in with a folk song.

PS Grammar grouchies take note: The required subject line is all capitals (Sing Of The Times).
