Re: Dawn, Diary, Land, Survival, and (Day of the Dead review

It didn't occur to me at the time that Niveous might have tailored the words to my voice, but as the other lyrics went up on Ye Olde Lyric Archive I marvelled at how sympatico these happened to be. Writing the music felt effortless.

I am amazed by Niveous' lyrical marathon!

Re: Canciones del Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead prefig

I submitted as Lunkhead. I put "Lyrics by Niveous, music by Lunkhead" in the "Composer" ID3 tag. Should I make an executive decision about normalizing how things are presented, when handling the song intake and posting the fight...? Also, FYI, if you haven't gotten your song in ...

Re: Day of the Dead

"Day of the Dead" lyrics by Niveous music by James Owens I can’t help myself I keep counting the days Since you swallowed all your pills And threw your life away There weren’t any signs You didn’t leave a note You just left us all to wonder Why you had to go I hope you have some time To ta...

The music is composed. These are great lyrics to work with, by the way.

Re: Niveous' Lyrical Marathon

Okay, let me just make this easy for everyone (especially for myself because I do archival stuff). Just give me a mention in the id3 tags somewhere. We could use the "album" tag. It's displayed in some players (certainly Windows Media Player). I usually put "Song Fight! 2015" (o...

Re: Niveous' Lyrical Marathon

I'll go with Niveous Presents [bandname] if and only if a majority of other people agree to do that. Otherwise, id3 tags. But more importantly, got to make a song first. Same for me, so that's two provisional votes for the tag. It makes sense semantically, and each song will be filed with the contr...

Re: Niveous' Lyrical Marathon

If you give me lyrics for this fight, I will write a song.

[EDITED] But that's a lot of lyrics. I don't know if you had this in mind, but I would also be willing to write an alternative song for the same lyrics you give somebody else. That could be interesting.

Re: Am I My Brother's Keeper? (Leave My Brother Alone review

AJ, My comment wasn't directed towards you. I was being far more general. This forum has had many a conversation on friend flooding and social media promotion. I feel like it should not be an issue anymore. It didn't feel like it was directed at me, so no worries. As for the perennial friend-floodi...

Re: Am I My Brother's Keeper? (Leave My Brother Alone review

If some really slack-assed entry were to take a big lead over a good song, that would be different. Oh man, that would certainly take the piss; it'd be a slippery slope, from which no good could possibly come. I'd probably still harbor a grudge if that had ever happened. Yeah, you'd definitely need...

Re: Am I My Brother's Keeper? (Leave My Brother Alone review

Ugh. Social media is a part of our daily lives. It can help bring new ears to the fight. Use social media, it's not a dirty practice. Just don't be a dick when you do it. Don't go online and say "vote for me and pick one other random band". That's dickly. Not having a Facebook account, I ...

Re: Am I My Brother's Keeper? (Leave My Brother Alone review

"Slandered" isn't the word I'd use, but the qualifier does seem to suggest that our vote count was inflated by something other than the strength of the song. Jerkatorium doesn't post songs anywhere else at this point, so if I'm happy about a new Jerk song and want my friends/family to hea...

Re: Fashion statements (Fashion reviews)

It's unsettling to get so many votes for a song conceived cynically and tossed together on a single Sunday the day before the fight, especially when, in the past, I've laboured for days on so many that I think were much better, but didn't do nearly as well. There's a lesson there somewhere, if not e...

Re: Fashion statements (Fashion reviews)

Heh, I assume the folks coming to fashion you are the Gestapo? I thought the beginning sounded a bit familiar, but I didn't realize the 'woh-oh-oh' thing was well.. a thing. I managed to find one recent example, complete with glockenspiel, and it's quite pretty too. I feel like there is a canonical...

Re: Fashion statements (Fashion reviews)

Berkeley Social Scene - There's a hook thing going on with the guitars, but its punch is diluted by the reverb. The texture is experimental but not quite working for me; the guitars and keyboard don't mesh with the very dry drums and bass. Some good moments in the composition -- "what to wear,...

Re: Fashion statements (Fashion reviews)

I review in the order the songs appear. Maybe I'm just too lazy to figure out the ABC's.... To see them in alphabetical order, click the album art. I plan to review soon, although it's the last sprint before ER, for those who know what I'm talkin' about, so we'll see. Re the reviews so far, thanks....

Re: Middle-aged Scandinavian men write most American pop hit

I probably should have been more specific. I certainly didn't mean to imply that pop songs are 'better' artistically, I meant better in terms of having a wider appeal on first listen, which can certainly help a song to score better when the votes are counted. As a reviewer, I end up listening to mo...

Re: Middle-aged Scandinavian men write most American pop hit

Thanks, that was an interesting read. But whether modern pop music, as represented by the likes of Rihanna or Beyoncé or Katy Perry, consists of "better songs" remains an open question. The article hints that the popularity of these tunes may be due in part to the attractiveness of the per...
