Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Zero "Semiprecious"

My rankings have been submitted. Niveous will post round results as soon as he's done tabulating. I'll admit that my rankings were a little hasty, and with more time to listen there probably would have been a lot of movement in the middle. I opted not to stress over that because it's round 0, there'...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Zero "Semiprecious"

Hey folks, I'm the straggling judge this week. I apologize; I got sick on Monday through most of Tuesday. I'll have rankings up in about two hours, hopefully, and reviews late tonight. :ugeek:

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Zero "Semiprecious"

I can only speak for me, but there absolutely is NOT one way to interpret it. That's what I like about the challenge. Yeah, I think the judges are mostly on the same page about that aspect of it this time. Can't speak for the other three, but we came to a consensus not to provide examples this time...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Starting Line

I really liked how last year's judging panel all posted introductions about their personal song preferences and general approach to judging, so I'll take this opportunity to do the same here. 1. Fundamentals. - Make sure your instruments are all in tune, that you're singing on key and performing to ...

Re: SpinTunes 17 Round 3 Songs

As a first-timer doing this competitively, it's been a really interesting process and I've enjoyed it enormously! I've found the reviews super helpful in understanding how the songs are received/heard and where things need to be tighter. Even the less than flattering reviews or comments generally s...

Re: SpinTunes 17 Round 3 Songs

Here are some severely belated reviews for Round 3. I figured I better start flexing my judgin' muscle! These are in order from the bottom (my least favorite) to the top (my favorite). I did not review or rank myself. One thing I found really interesting was just how radically my opinions deviated f...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Starting Line

Interestingly, this year's judging panel is 3/5 the same as the one in Nur Ein X. Pigfarmer Jr., Johnny Cashpoint, and I all judged that year as well. However, that was the first year Niveous sat out judging. Glad to see you on the other side of the table again for this one, Niveous!

Wait...does this mean that I beat glennnny as being the only person in EVERY nur ein? (though - from memory - surely Sam and Ken were also in every Nur Ein with me?)
I guess it depends on how you count. You were a judge in Nur Ein X. :geek:

Re: Nur Ein XVI

Near the end of every Nur Ein, there's always some drama and grousing from the judging panel about how it's a thankless job... And I sympathize with that. But may I offer a counterpoint? I find judging to be genuinely rewarding and fulfilling. It's educational to listen to a large group of songs, mo...

Re: SpinTunes 17 Round 3 RESULTS

Cybronica, I know yours wasn't the most positive review of my song, but it definitely made me feel the most seen. I agonized over whether to stick with my first pass of the chorus lyric because of that "baby back" connotation. Two days in, I was still singing it to myself and none of the p...

Re: SpinTunes 17 Round 4 Challenge

Here's another terrific song that meets this challenge: https://spintunes.bandcamp.com/track/i-hear-the-roar  I did a song like this as part of a FAWM ten years ago. It's just a rough demo, solo voice and piano, lots of mistakes in the performance. I kept meaning to go back and flesh it out som...

Re: SpinTunes 17 Round 2 Listening Party

All right, now that the judging is over, I'd like to share a few details about my song. First of all, a couple of reviews broached this (and I expected it to be a dealbreaker, to be honest—I'm surprised I didn't get cut)... No, there's no existing connection between Futurama and "The Love Song ...

Re: SpinTunes 17 Round 2 Challenge

My low point working on our song last week came when I realized that it was clocking in at 4:56. I cut it down to 3:51 by removing empty space (that I was going to fill with saxophones) from the chorus, and then put 12 seconds back in to make a little more space for... saxophones. But if I go down ...

Re: SpinTunes 17 Round 2 Challenge

Does a slower tempo at 3:00 seem longer than a faster tempo at 3:00?? It really depends on the song and the subjective experience of the person listening to it, but I think a faster tempo song generally feels LONGER than a slow-tempo song of the same overall length. I also had a couple of structure...

Also a good point - most of the rules (both official and judge preference) don't apply to shadow entries. So that's one benefit to being cut early.

Re: What Were They Thinking? Spintunes 17 Round 2

My song is from the perspective of Lieutenant Kif Kroker, from the TV series Futurama . My brother Harrison contributed his impersonation of Zapp Brannigan. I couldn't manage the entire vocal performance in character voice, but the spoken word "Yes, Sir" part in Kif's voice is me. Bald, Gr...

Re: SpinTunes 17 Round 2 Challenge

I got mine submitted. Since we're talking tempos and song lengths, mine is mostly 112bpm, but it jumps up to 123bpm for the bridge, then back down again. My song clocked in at 3:13. You're welcome, judges. (Yes, when I'm judging Nur Ein, I will absolutely hold it against you if you submit a lo...
