Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Six "Devil In The Rain"

I don't consider it a requirement for each of the remaining competitors to upload a Youtube video of their song playing over the source video, but I do appreciate the convenience afforded to me as a judge by those who have done this.

Thank you all!

Either way I'll be fine with it.
Assuming it's done well.
It should go without saying that "Being fine with your take on the challenge" and "Liking your song" are two dramatically different bars to clear for everyone. :ugeek:

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Five "The Only Way Out"

Thanks for the review, and if I don't see you next round (you sure make it sound that way) I'll see you next Nur. Aw crap. I wrote this with some assumptions in mind based on the scores I'd already seen. I had intended to not publish until after the results were public, but when I clicked "Sen...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Six "Devil In The Rain"

I concur with the other two judges who've weighed in already. I'm not expecting some musical element to align with every cut. We intentionally avoiding using the words "soundtrack" or "score" so as to avoid suggesting instrumental soundtrack pieces (though for the record, I perso...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Five "The Only Way Out"

In my defence what I did was google modulation and found (Music, other) music the transition from one key to another Downward means go down (obviously). So I tried to add elements that go from one key down to the other and didn't think anything else of it. I'm reminded of when the challenge was &qu...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Five "The Only Way Out"

My theory nerd brain really wants to explore this more instead of sleeping, but unlike my self righteous rant above, I’m going to stick this behind a spoiler bar so that judges have to actively choose to be influenced by my thoughts  I had been talking with some Nur Einers last week about ...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Five "The Only Way Out"

What's this? Jon did two sets of reviews in one night? I'm finally caught up! Yay! Overall, this was another frustrating round to judge because you guys are all really good and the field is getting uncomfortably tight! NUR EIN!!!!! Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Five "The Only Way Out"

If ya’ll wanted something more specific, I would have expected the pedantic self-indulgent discussions of the previous rounds. I was genuinely shocked that there weren't any such discussions until after the songs were turned in. I thought, "You know, the musical scale is a cycle , so if you go...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Four "Waiting For The Sun To Fall"

Belated reviews! Sorry, folks, I started a new job near the beginning of the year, and they didn't tell me that Nur Ein season would also be the time of year we would get absolutely buried in work. It's really eaten into my judging/reviewing time, not to mention time for my own music. Ah well. This ...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Four "Waiting For The Sun To Fall"

So I have been eliminated, which is OK to me and I'm not complaining. I would just like to know if it was because of my taking liberties with the challenge, or just because it was a lousy song/arrangement. That would be nice to know. I guess it's the latter. Full reviews to come, but I did not knoc...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Three "Pleasant Row"

Belated judge reviews - in order of my rankings, from bottom to top. It was a strong round overall. We're getting to the point where I'm ranking even songs that I like low on the list, so I hope you all don't take it too personally! Cavedwellers - I get that I'm just being an uncultured philistine h...

I haven't actually submitted my file, but I've now made enough progress to state with confidence that I'll be in. It's just a question of how much time I'll get to clean up the performances and mix now. :-)

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Two "Drag Me Around"

Hi everyone! I'm sorry I dropped the ball on reviews last week. Here are the belated "Drag Me Around" reviews. Balance Lost - I appreciate that you bridged the songs backward, which was an approach to the challenge that I hadn't thought of! (I assumed that the sequence of songs would be &q...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Four "Waiting For The Sun To Fall"

OK, so for clarification: does "rondel" mean that the entire lyric has to be a rondel, or does it just need to contain a rondel? I'm asking because Google says a rondel isn't a particularly long form of poem, three stanzas, 15 lines, so if the entire song has to be a rondel I'll probably ...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Three "Pleasant Row"

What about fictional languages like Klingon or High Valyrian? Those aren't language games, they are conlangs. I would count those. I wrote a conlang for my song! You had better show your work and I'm kinda fascinated by conlangs. It's going to lead to a lot of conversations and unless conlangs are ...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Three "Pleasant Row"

Over on the Discord, a heated discussion kicked up about possible loopholes or (mis)interpretations of this challenge. I'm going to try to summarize some of the questions and weigh in. I encourage the other judges to do so as well, especially when they disagree with me. First up - I kicked the horne...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round One "Pareidolia"

Belated judge Reviews! A couple of overall comments: I wish more entrants had understood that the title doesn't need to appear in the lyrics! "Pareidolia" is a hard word to sing, and I think a number of these songs might have been better if the title had been implied, rather than wedged (o...

Aww, Lucky Spoon had a really satisfying course correction between rounds 0 and 1... but also was a strong candidate for the most challenging two songs to bridge together. I'm really sorry to see them cut.

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round One "Pareidolia"

Thanks for the reviews, LT! They’re all so thoughtful; I am amazed by your turn around time. Thank you for your kind words, too. I wish I knew what was causing the distortion on our song- there’s no peaking that I can see in the wave forms, so I worry it’s something to do with my mic or interface. ...

This weekend, my mom and stepdad are visiting me from across the country (haven’t seen them in quite a while!) so I had to finish my song up well before the deadline this time. Submitted. Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Zero "Semiprecious"

In contrast to Niveous, I didn't want to post any reviews until I could post all of them, so you lot had to wait until the wee hours of Friday, when you're hopefully more than halfway done with your Round 1 entries, before reading what I liked and didn't like about your Round 0 songs. Such is the wa...
