"The Nicest Guy You'll Meet in Seattle"

Post by JonPorobil »

Here's some backstory.

In 2013, comedian Todd Barry did a stand-up tour with no prepared material—every show was nothing but him bantering with individual audience members. In early 2014, they released a documentary about the tour to Netflix. This weekend, I was watching this documentary. Around the 43-minute mark in the movie, they show scenes from his Seattle show, in which he banters with this guy:

He looks pretty familiar, right? As they're passing the mic to this audience member, Barry asks, "You're not mean, are you?" The man's answer was "I'm the nicest guy you'll meet in Seattle."

At this point, my hunch is now a nagging feeling, so I log onto YouTube, just to see if the video of my performance from Song Fight Live in Seattle 2012 is still up there. Sure enough, it's there (thanks, glennny!). https://youtu.be/lsQ1mLS1zGA?t=286 I've got it queued up to the end of my song, when a belligerent crowd member come up to the stage, looks me in the eye, and begs me to stop.

Am I crazy? It's the same guy, right? Does anyone have any better photos or video of him?

Not the same guy. Look at the hook nose on the guy that told you to stop. The Nicest Guy In Seattle doesn't have the Streisand hook on his nose. Thank you for calling.

Ok.....next caller, you're on the air with the guy that knows everything. .....not to be confused with the nicest guy in Seattle. What can I do you for, caller? :P

Doesn't look like the same guy to me, but the second photo is too blurry to say for sure. Different nose, forehead and eyebrows. Also the second guy looks fatter. But then again, the angle is totally different.

Yeah but like half the dudes in Seattle look like that (and maybe 1/4 of the ladies too)

Anyway there's another (shitty) picture of him that I took from on stage that was used in the Strictly Speaking cover.

(And yeah I concur with BLT on this one, the noses are totally different)

Could be Jack Conte too:

Just kidding. All those white hipster dudes with the dark beards and knit caps look the same to me.

Honestly though, while it would make for an interesting story, I don't think they're the same guy.

He didn't like ANYONE that night. He also physically assaulted Glenn Case on the way out. So.

He actually grabbed Glenn's guitar with the intention of damaging it.

I thought for sure someone got a better photo of the heckler. Oh well.

Something about his voice and attitude tipped me off, but that particular vocal cadence might be just as common in Seattle as beards and knit caps, so maybe I'm just looking for a connection where there isn't one.

So, uh, hey. How's everyone been doing? I've been under a rock for a while.
