It's more to do with the fact that the chemical structure is H-O-H. It's more likely to split into an H+ and an OH- ion when it reacts than it is for the two Hs to split off from the O (the H+ goes off to form an acid and the OH- goes off to form a base). So, for example, table salt dissolved in water is actually a mixture of water, lye (NaOH), and hydrochloric acid (HCl).Lord of Oats wrote:My chem teacher in high school insisted that water should be written HOH instead of H2O, because of "the way it reacts," or something to that effect. I assume that means it's more likely to form hydroxides than oxides. And I never really looked into it. I guess the guy couldn't have been that crazy, because I did get a 4 on AP Chem.
