AUSTIN!
Didn't know where else to post this, but it's official:
I'll be permanently moving to Austin, TX this summer (where "permanently" means for at least a couple of years). I remember there being a lot of Songfighters from the Austin area when I was in high school, but many of them don't fight anymore. Is there still a pretty strong Songfight Austin contingent?

Actually, the only time I've ever been to Texas was when I was a kid, driving across the pan handle. Before we moved to Cali, we would drive from Ohio to Cali to my Grand parents for Christmas break.
We did that 5 times, the fifth was when we move to Cali.
We would stop at this great steak restaurant called The Big Texan. I love French fries, and this place had the biggest French fries I had ever seen. Also, when you walk in the door, there is a buffalo head hanging on the wall that had a speaker hidden in it's mouth, and some dude with a visual on the door traffic welcoming the guests. I just remember thinking it was the coolest damn place. I always wanted to try to eat the 64oz steak and get it free, but my Dad would never let me, lol. memories
EDIT: Talking about it just stirred my interest as to where The Big Texan is located in Texas. It's in Amarillo Texas and the big free steak if you can eat the whole thing, is 72oz, not 64oz as I remembered it. I'm sure I can still eat the whole thing, cha.
Generic, please go eat there if you're anywhere near it. Tell me it's everything great that I remember it as. Here's a link >> The Big Texan

Austin seems to be the Portland of Texas from what I hear -- although they have good barbeque and Mexican food, so it might actually be a leg up on Portland. I've never been there myself, but I'd like to check it out.frankie big face wrote:Um...have you been to Austin? It's not exactly like the rest of Texas. Or the south, for that matter.

I was there for a three-day conference once... The rest I have on hearsay.
Anyways, as far as why I'll be in Austin? I guess if the options are "school or yob," it's more job than school, but it's not my job, but rather my fiancée's. And since my current state is a bit more fluid, I just said "Sure, honey, Austin sounds great!" And now I'm seeking gainful employment there myself.

Or rather, Portland is the Austin of the North.anti-m wrote:Austin seems to be the Portland of Texas from what I hear -- although they have good barbeque and Mexican food, so it might actually be a leg up on Portland. Well, it's not a "potential" love interest... and we're moving at the same time, together, to the same place... Does that give me an edge in the betting pool?

WOW that's a long drive. It'll actually take longer to get to that steakhouse than it will take to get back to New Orleans next time I want to visit home. Weird.Billy's Little Trip wrote:I looked at a map. Looks like Austin is pretty far from Amarillo. So you might not want to drive that far to eat the 72oz steak for me.
Still, we might be doing a "West Texas" road trip at some point, so if we're in the area, I'll make sure to hit that steakhouse. And starve myself beforehand in the name of frugality...
