Parents of Songfight

Post by Niveous »

Inspired by the documentary "The Other F Word", I thought it would be cool to have a thread for the songfighters who have taken the wild plunge in parenthood.

I'm a dad of two- M, my 10 year old who can already play drums far far better than I ever could; and T, my anime loving 12 year old. (Yes, they have full names. I just tend to call Toby and Max, T & M all the time.)

Who else here is a Songfight Parent?

Have your sons ever seen you play live?

Yes, you've all heard about Erik and Jason, who came to 2011 SFLive at the Firehouse in NYC, and have also appeared on various SF songs (such as Talk About Your Feelings). In the fall I predict they will start appearing in fights on drums and violin.

Yes, many many times, in fact. One of the clubs we played was owned by a friend of ours. But my wife didn't like the idea of them at punk clubs (for good reason) and it was a short wave and smile. I have VHS tapes of me playing guitar with Christopher on drums and Cody on bass. I used to have them keep time for me while I worked on new rhythms. It was so incredible seeing their determined faces to keep perfect time. To this day they are spot on. I REALLY need to get that stuff transferred to disc. But I'm sure it's like home videos to everyone and only awesome to me and my wife.

My son L is 3 and my daughter C is 1. You may have heard some of L's ramblings especially at FAWM. I should get him back into the studio and see what he will do but it's harder when C is around and I'm not up for wrangling the two of them together down there yet. Not so baby proofed. They've never seen me do any live shows, but, well, I haven't done any since before C was born...

I started songfighting in 2001. Daughter 1 arrived in 2003. Daughter 2 arrived in 2005. Daughter 3 arrived in 2008. You can graph the decline in my songfighting productivity as a function of that.

For me, the first years when the kids were small, it was a lot easier to make music. They would go to bed early. I would go to the other side of the house and record. Now as pre-teens, they never sleep and I don't record as much on the weekends.

I got into Song Fight shortly after Annabella was born. She's now 7. She's been on half a dozen tracks.
My son was born during the Anamoly fight, he's now almost 5.

Ross has kids, Martyr has 2 kids as well.
