Welcome to socal.

Mike and Irwin have put together some sort of franken-PA that uses a laptop as the mixer, they were also going to record through it, so i am not sure how jakcing your machine into that will work.

I plan to get there around 4:30 or five myself. If you get ther before me, ask for Breck, he is a personal friend and knows we are coming.

The alleged BBQ is still on.

Um what to do in long beach? Well, there's the Queen Mary, a decent aquarium, you might be able to catch a harbor cruise or whale watching trip, supposedly there's Russian submarine somewhere.

Looking forward to seeing you/meeting you again.

I'll be there around 5; I'm working in Carlsbad that day, so I won't have far to go. I can't help you with the touristy stuff, though.

Well for touristy type things, the aquarium there is really good.

And it's practically right across the street from the Hyatt

Oh, if recording is already covered, then my laptop could be used for streaming instead, then. Is the recording just going to be a board feed or will there be room mics too?

I'll have to check the aquarium out. Tomorrow. Tonight I'm spent. Most of the drive was wonderful, but then I got to LA, and then I was stuck in traffic, but I repeat myself.

I think irwin and mike were hoping to run room micas as well.

We like the aquarium, you can pet sharks :-)

Excellent. Sounds like I overprepared, but better to have too much gear than not enough. (And really I could have fit a LOT MORE in my car.)

Okay this line has been bugging me since I first saw it. Have we actually met in person before? I don't remember you being at any SFLives, and I think on the various tours you always stopped before I started. Am I going to feel like a total ass tomorrow? Or was it just a generic shout-out to everyone who's coming?

I mean I have neurological problems with this but that doesn't stop me from fretting about these things (maybe it makes me fret more?).

We were both at songfight presents LA, February 2006. I was still pretty new then and there were a lot of people there, I'm not sure we did more than shake hands and say nice to meet you.

Don't feel like an ass, no offense taken.

For some reason I thought that was your brother but I guess it's a different Steve! Huh.

That show was before I finally learned how to use a guitar pick, and I was still doing that limp-wristed fingerstrumming thing that made me look even faggier than I am. Also my fashion [lack of] sense has changed (marginally). PREPARE TO HAVE YOUR MINDS BLOWN.

Anyway, bedtime for me. I think everyone here has my cellphone number, if they want to meet up for lunch or whatever.

Bring your mics, and we'll feed them into the board as room mics. We can send a mix of the stage and room mics and the direct inputs to your laptop for the stream audio. What kind of inputs do you need? Output would be 1/8" line level. All tracks would also be recorded.

1/8" line level is fine. I'd prefer dual mono 1/4" or dual xlr, but 1/8 line is probably going to be the easiest.

Sorry, brain fart. Output will be a pair of 1/4". We can also output spidif if that's easier.

Ah, even better (the dual 1/4" I mean). I don't have s/pdif on my portable interface but that's okay, this is just for streaming a lo-fi indie rock performance to the Internet so I don't really see that making a difference.

Note that the mics I brought for room-mic purposes are condensers and need phantom power. Will that be a problem?

I'm going to be recording parts of the show by duct-taping a Flip to the wall, so my kids can see what goes on. This is not useful information to any of you, but it's a good reminder to me that I need some duct tape.

EDIT: Ah, I wish I had thought of the possible need for phantom power. I have a 4-pot mixer at home (that I hadn't even thought of before) with phantom power, but I'm in Carlsbad now. Grr. *IF* we're screwed without phantom power, let me know ASAP (cell's 323-841-4307) and I'll make the long drive back to get it -- but if we're not screwed, don't do that. :P

Well, we might be able to work something else out with the signal path or something. My portable interface does do phantom power, and it can act as a mixer as long as it's plugged into a computer (via FireWire). Unfortunately, that means we wouldn't be able to use it for streaming directly.

My original plan (when I thought I'd be recording the show) was to just have an RCA or 1/8" line from the board to my interface's line input (3/4), and have the room mics on its 1/2, and then let someone else capture the mixed output onto their computer for streaming while I recorded them all to discrete channels so I could do a better mix after-the-fact.

Maybe we should meet up at the venue a bit earlier so that we have a bit more time to work this stuff out? 5:00 would only give us two hours, and that's not sounding like it's enough now. :)

I am bringing a small mixer with phantom power, and my guitar pre also has phantom power, although I'll be using when I play since my pick up is passive.

Maybe I should just stream with the room mics only, and let ustream record it.
