SFBB Issues?

Is anybody else having any issues with the boards? I was unable to log in to them from my work computer today, I kept getting an error when I tried to log in. I seem to still be logged in at home though. I wonder if I can post...?

I got errors when posting but the post got saved it looks like. Weird! Anyway, we know about it and somebody with some PHP skillz will be looking into it soon-ish, fyi.

The problem seems to be something that's kind of straightforward to fix? I'll try putting in a temporary monkey patch for now.

Thank you for fixing that. I did notice that when I clicked "Post Reply" below your last post, I got the same PHP error messages at the top of the browser window, but the login succeeded.

Characters sorted by frequency? The last time I thought about that, I was ten years old and interested in ciphers. It seems "e" is still very popular (in English, presumably). I guess the point here is some sort of character-vetting optimization. It's weird what programmers care about.

Thanks fluffy!

I still think we should set up a Discourse instance on DigitalOcean for $10/month...

AJ: I have no idea what that function is supposed to be used for but it seems to be some sort of encoding detection/repair thing. If they'd just declare their goddamn encodings correctly in the first place none of that would be necessary.

Lunkhead: I am obviously no fan of phpBB but IMO Discourse isn't very good. There's plenty of decent self-hosted forums available these days, and many of them even support a direct import from phpBB.

Oh and the reason this error message prevented new logins is because it was generating an error message before PHP could set the session cookie, because PHP is a fucking piece of shit in general. This didn't affect any existing logins but it did prevent it from creating new ones.

Discourse is written using more of a "real"/pro stack than PHP (Ruby on Rails, Postgres, Redis, Ember.js), is mobile/tablet friendly out of the box, has a plug-in system and an API, has social log-in support, spam blocking, etc. We could host it on our own virtual server where there would never be any problems from forced OS/language/etc. updates. It also has support to import from PHPBB. If it's good enough for Boing Boing, I imagine it's more than good enough for us. It would be light years ahead of PHPBB and I could set it up in a weekend.

I know that technologically-speaking it kicks phpBB's ass, but I really don't like the user experience of it. We use it at work, and it's been slowly infecting a bunch of other websites I visit. I really do not care for it.

Well, since you don't like it, I think we should definitely continue to do nothing. That makes sense...

I am so totally not saying "continue to do nothing." I am saying we should look at other forum options. I would prefer to find ones which are lightweight and have some level of API access, but I'd like something with a user experience that's still more or less like the classic collection-of-forums that was popularized by UBB and is provided by many other forum systems.

There are dozens out there, and I'm more than happy to try some out before settling on one to switch to.

That is very fucking different than "continue to do nothing."

I couldn't log in last time I tried, which was Friday evening (Nov. 13). I got a bunch of php error messages on top of the regular screen saying "You are successfully logged in", then auto-redirected to a white screen with different php error messages, then went back to Board Index without being logged in. I screenshotted the whole shebang, just in case. I would've sent an email to the fightmasters, but I figured it'd probably be worked out by Monday, which, yep.

Although this time when I successfully logged in, I still got that error-message-fillled "You are logged in" screen, but at least it let me in this time.

Yeah my quick fix was focused on getting the login cookies working again. Any other issues that you can find, let me know (post a screenshot to this thread or whatever) and I'll try to fix them, but see this other thread.

All this web nonsense sucks. Let's go back to usenet.

(I am not entirely joking)

Here's what I see when I log in:

It doesn't seem to have any functional effect, just looks funny, so I don't mind. But there it is.

Okay, that's the same sort of bug as the one that was preventing login. Easy enough to fix.

EDIT: Should be fixed now.

Oh, I see, the way I found "all" of the broken stuff didn't account for there being more than one way for them to have written it brokenly.

Try again?
