Waxen is a spammer

Post by Dan-O from Five-O »

We seem to have a spammer on the boards. Goes by the name of Waxen. They're posting links to some sort of discount drug site. I think they need to go bye-bye.

The stupid puns are like shareware. I give them out for free (oh, generous moi) and you only get the actual funny things if you register.

We shouldn't assume that mkilly has had The Karate Kid take up as large a part of his cultural formative experience as some of us, since it came out before he was born.

As, it would appear, is Pecan, posting a link to a pharmacy in the Secret Ceremony lyric thread, of all places ...

Smack 'em down, already :)

And again, now in the 'Rocking the f**k out' thread. Kill Pecan now, (well, delete the account), that's my suggestion.

wouldn't you need a quick trip to a pharmacy after a heavy secret ceremony?

Best way to get rid of forum spam these days is to just make the forum not indexable by search engines, like adding this to songfight.net's robots.txt:

Code: Select all

User-agent: *
Disallow: /forums/
Though these rules are much more permissive and still seem to take care of a lot of spammers:

Code: Select all

User-agent: *
Disallow: /forums/memberlist.php
Disallow: /forum/posting.php
Disallow: /forum/profile.php
A slightly less baby-with-the-bathwater solution is to enable mod_rewrite on the server and add this stuff to the .htaccess file in either /forums/ or in the server root:

Code: Select all

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} you.can.*reply [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} google.*new.topic [NC]
RewriteRule . http://google.com/ [R,L]
which basically says, "If someone gets here from a websearch on 'you can[not] reply' or 'new topic' forward them back to Google." (There's no reason those phrases would show up in a legitimate referral to the forum.) You can also look at the server's referrer log for the posting IP address to add more phrases, though I've found that those two are the most common searches which lead to a comment spammer registration.

Basically, whenever a spammer comes up, grep for their IP address in the referrer log and find how they found the forum, and make it so others can't get to it in that way. My forum used to get a hell of a lot of spammers until I started using these techniques. They can't spam what they can't find.

different subject slightly...

but I get heaps of spam to my email address - rich Nigerians, software salesment, lottery wins etc - that sort of stuff. Is that because I have my email address displayed on my SF! profile? I have a 'caravanray' address that I really don't use anywhere but here.

Anyway - I've hiddden it from my profile now to see if that makes a difference. Anyone else have any ideas? I mean, I know it's going to pay off big soon - but I'm just getting a bit short on cash at the moment sending all this money to Nigeria...

phpBB never actually publishes your email address directly, it only allows people to mail you via a form. If you put your email address directly on the web or give it to someone who reposts it elsewhere or sells it to spammers, that's how you get spam.
