Is hotlinking not allowed?
The songlink on the front page of my website redirects to the archive page, yet when I copy/paste the link location, it works. I'd like people to listen to my song, but I don't want them to know I got two votes.
I remember hotlinking SF stuff on somesongs.. did I miss the meeting? Do I have to man up and host it myself?

From this thread:
So it's verboten, but apparantly (as of last month) unenforced.jb wrote:6. You ARE NOT PERMITTED to link directly to your song on songfight.org (this has nothing to do with friend-flooding, and everything to do with get-your-own-damn-web-hosting-you-cheap-bastard). We don't currently do anything to enforce this, other than send you bad vibes and possibly rename a file in the archive if too many people are hitting the stupid hentai-kitty song because they think it has to do with anthropomorphic cat s fucking.

Oh damn, I'm not real familiar with a lot of this stuff, which I should be because I Admin a site, but I never have to deal with that part of it, plus the site is huge and well funded, so it never comes up.
I've been linking SF every week to get people to come over and vote. I'll quite often link a few songs of interest (not my own) to get a wide range of listeners. Is this bad? Is there a "correct" way of to linking Song Fight so that it doesn't cause problems? I'm guess I should just link http://songfight.org/ and not the individual song links.
Also, does it cause trouble when I paste a smiley from another site and add the "Img" tags? I'm guessing no, but it would be a problem in the reverse order.

I prefer to link to the fight page itself. Problem is, the current fights change page names when they slide into the archives, don't they? So I usually link to the front page and tell people which fight I'm in, which, with one fight at a time these days, is an easy thing to do.*

Link to the fight page (every fight has a page in the archive) and say "listen to _____ and ______, they're my favorites"
Jim's right though, the name does change. Maybe Spud can add a page for the current fights-- I dunno how hard that'll be for him to code.

What about linking to your personal archive page? You miss the context of the fight, but you also avoid the nasty embarrassment of your low votes.

jb, have you thought about adding http://www.lightningmp3.com (and maybe http://www.netfast.org) to the FAQ? I know this issue doesn't have much to do with songfighting, <i>per se</i>, but the question comes up a lot ...

I never link to the archive, just to get that straight. I may be a cheap bastard, but Dreamhost has taken care of my bandwidth very well.jb wrote:That's currently possible, although it still falls on the "get-your-own-damn-hosting-you-cheap-bastard" side of the fence a bit, IMHO.

Mostly, what I would have to do is change when the fight gets added to the archive. Currently it is after the voting takes place, because all that stuff goes in as well.jb wrote:Maybe Spud can add a page for the current fights-- I dunno how hard that'll be for him to code.

I suppose I could throw it in right way and add the voting stuff later, and link it the same as everything else.
I will look into it.

Honestly didn't realise this was not the 'right thing to do' so am in the process of breaking all the links to songs hosted here at songfight! and uploading originals to my own site to conform. Should be done by this evening...
One question though, I have several links to cover art through the art archive, does this also fall under the same rule, if it does then I'll happily set about removing those links as well.

I've got another question: what about linking to someone else's song? Like, say in my blog I want to write a post about a great song from the archive that I want people to check out and I can't or don't know where to find it hosted by the original artist(s)? Should I also have to host other fighters' songs if I ever want to link to them?

If you link to a song, the user will be redirected to the fight page for that song. It is up to you to point them to the song that you want them to listen to in your text.
BTW, this enforcement measure has been taken not because of songfighter abuse, but because of hot-linking by some music-sharing services that were hitting us so often that the server was choking, which may have been causing the 503s some of you saw.
