Songs missing from artist pages

Post by Manhattan Glutton »

(Sorry if this is starting to get annoying. Verifying the data integrity of the archive isn't all that fun to me either.)

Bug: When someone submits a new artist name that resolves to an already generated key, the old artist page gets wiped. This has to do with capitalization differences or prepending "the " etc.
Or is it a feature to clear your archive page? 8-)

It's a known bug in how archive pages are handled, for exactly the problem you've mentioned. It's yet another reason why I wish I had the motivation to make a better archive system for Spud, but whatever. Every now and then people post lists of bands for Spud to fix and he gets around to it eventually.

I think if you go through the Music Archive thread in the Quality Control forum, working back from the last page, you will find many if not all of these things brought up already, some things repeatedly. Personally I just decided to treat artists whose names differ only in case to be the same. There are still issues with artists who are very probably the same but have minor non-case differences, like "Titans of Eklekto-clash" vs. "Titans of Electo-Clash", etc. Generally Spud fixes some stuff but says that the responsibility is with the submitter to be consistent with his own band name.

I cannot parse this list. i.e. it doesn't tell me what are the problems that I am supposed to fix.

Thanks.

Here is the problem: Is "The Larrys" the same band as "Larry"? How do I know that? Is "octothrop" the same band as "Octothorpe"? How do I know that? Is Jon Benjamin the same band as John Benjamin? How do I know that? Is "hollies" the same band as "The Hollies"? How do I know that?

It was <artist> - <title> for songs missing from the <artist>'s archive page.

I'd be glad to provide a format you can script from if you provide such.
If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

What artist are you hoping I will move the entry from and what artist are you hoping I will move it to... i.e. what is the correct spelling/cap and which is wrong?

My reading of it is it's another case where there's varying-case artist names in the archive, and those are the ones on the losing side, case-wise.

Err, I'm not all that familiar with how you do things on the back end, but if I know what format is easiest for you, I can do that...

So for example Panna Cotta Army and The Panna Cotta Army both map to the key panna_cotta_army. According to The System, they're already the same artist. Except when The Panna Cotta Army submitted, Panna Cotta Army's artist page got overwritten. So if you browse to artistpage?key=panna_cotta_army, it only shows two songs when there should be 8. What is the best way to communicate that?
If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

exactly like you just did, except that, if possible, you should tell me which one is preferred.

Hmm, I figured the old artist page/linking was gone forever so that the title was the important part, but it seems like that's not the case? The old display name and new display name are the important infos you need?

They are not gone forever. I just somewhat arbitrarily changed all "The Panna Cotta Army" to "Panna Cotta Army" for example, and they all show up. In my opinion, if a band cannot keep their name straight, that is not really my problem. Is "Talking Heads" the same band as "The Talking Heads"? I think not. And if you ask David Byrne, I am pretty sure he would agree.

Oh I agree. I just figured since I was working with the data that I'd let someone know.
