Winner for "I Take That Back"?

It looks like there was a mistake in the listing for the winner. "Ken's Super Duper Band" is listed as the winner, but MMMC has the most votes by far.

Yes. But given that MMMC's song was completely shithouse - it seems like that the mistake is not of any consequence.

Fair point. However, I was of the impression that SongFight's winners were determined by votes, and not by the moderators.

What does winning Song Fight get you, anyway?

Nothing special. Just bragging rights, same as anyone else. Is there some rule I was unaware of about asking friends to vote on a fight?

Edit: Just to be clear, I'm not trying to fight the mods on this one. If there was a rule that was violated or a reason we've been DQed, I accept that; I just want to be aware of the rule and will adjust my practice accordingly the next time we compete.

True - it is unusual. There have been many songs that have won large unlikely victories in the past. Fightmasters move in strange and mysterious ways.

I think the general rule of thumb is that it OK to to ask friends to come and listen to the songs and vote for their favourites - but not to simply ask them to vote for you (the result may end up the same, and your friends may just vote for you without listening anyway - but at least you tried). Your tweet only suggested voting - not listening.

If MMMC got the most votes, then MMMC won. If you got the most votes then there must be a typo or something in the winning count, and I'm sure Spud'll fix it or explain why. Of course, we could just leave it in place to be an epic moment in history for historians to discuss. Maybe we could like, put an asterisk next to Ken's Super Duper Band n' Stuff from now on! That would be cool. You could be like those guys in that episode of ST:TOS who at the end are just battling each other in another dimension until the end of time.

Thanks for the follow-up, jb. I appreciate you looking into it.

You aren't the first person to attempt a friendflood, and you won't be the last, but this also isn't the first time that Spud's changed the results based on friendflooding either.

It's not like anyone entered into any binding contract here.

I did it to precipitate a discussion, which seems to be taking place.

Crates did not even ask his friends to listen to his song. Fact is, he more or less warned them not to by telling them how crappy it was (that and "It only takes a second"):
google+ wrote:Friends: I need your help! Please read this post and give me a hand with something. It'll only take a second, I promise!

So, a buddy and I decided to release another hastily-produced track for SongFight. The title this week is "I Take That Back"... it really came down to the wire, so the final product is really sloppy, but we'd still like you to vote for us!

Here's how it works:
1) Head over to http://songfight.org/
2) Vote for "MMMC" and any one other band. Feel free to pick the second one at random. You MUST vote for at least one other band in order for it to count!
3) Click the "+1" button on this post so other people can see it, and so we know that we have your support!

That's it! It only takes a second, so please give us a hand.

Thanks, everyone! Mad love to everyone who supports MMMC.
Because they followed his instructions exactly, there were 112 instances of an MMMC voter voting for one other band, and they are more or less evenly distributed over the rest of the bands, due to the random nature of the second band selection. It didn't just skew MMMC's votes, it skewed ALL the votes. If we remove seven votes per band, and 16*7, or 112 from MMMC, we get the following results:

Barkley's So-Called Need 7
Berkeley Social Scene 21
Caravan Ray 12
The Chadderandom Abyss 2
The Chocolate Chips 5
Cookie Blue 4
Foobar 8
J.A.N. 4
Jeff DeSantis 15
Ken's Super Duper Band 'n Stuff winner 26
Klownhole 8
The Magnetic Letters 10
MMMC 4
New Image 13
Paco del Stinko 10
Rio Mondo 8
Scott Gesser 8

And that looks a lot more like it should, to me.

Of course, if it's popular opinion that the results should stand, I would be more than happy to move the word winner back next to MMMC. JBB gets more votes than the rest of you.

Hmmm...I was just about to say on the subject of winners, that 19 votes is the best result ever for a Caravan Ray song - so I was considering myself a bit of a winner too.

But it looks like Spud just burst that bubble....

Sorry, C Ray. You know, since I can clearly manipulate the results, you can always vote with your pocketbook if you really need the win...

Oh - you accept cash now? I always found the sexual favours a bit off-putting.

The cool thing to do is to ask your friends to listen, not just vote. As has been said, if they don't listen, at least you tried.

You are absolutely right. It was bad form, and I knew I submitted a song of less quality than is worth a win.

The only reason I even inquired was that I was competing with a singer who has never recorded anything before, and I know a win would boost his confidence. I can appreciate your position and agree that it isn't fair to solicit votes without giving adequate consideration to the other competitors.

Thank you for taking the time to explain the results.

So what now? Options:

1. Leave it the way it is. MMMC gets the votes, but Ken gets the win.
2. Put the win onto the band with the most votes, MMMC.
3. Adjust ALL the votes, per my post above.

Discuss.

My opinion is leave it the way it is. MMMC gets the votes and Ken gets the win.
I think we've established what the etiquette is. I think we should explain that in the FAQ.
Advertising for you and the site and the other artists is good. Asking for votes without listening is bad. You all have phrased it more eloquently, I feel bad MMMC is surprised by this.

PS I still listen to MMMC "Covered in Bugs", they are certainly capable of good stuff!

I have just been watching the first series of "Game of Thrones", and I liked the bit where the musician was given the choice by the King on whether he wanted his hands cut off or his tongue pulled out.

I love that the faq page was never fixed with the current fight count.

Anyway, the faq does already address this, sort of:
Can I vote more than once?

We really wish you wouldn't. Vote for as many songs as you like, but vote only once. Voting multiple times doesn't really get you anything does it? There's no prize or anything after all, and what satisfaction is there in bragging rights if you cheated to get them?

I vote for the option above as well as a nice little note in the faq stating that
