Getting a song deleted

Post by obesechess »

Hi all,

About three years ago, after having made rap music and recorded myself for all of about two weeks, I entered my first and only songfight matchup. The results were... okay, I'm going to be honest, it was an objectively awful song. Like, it was really, REALLY, embarrassingly bad. It still is.

That said, it still pops up on the first page when someone Googles my music and I would just as soon have it be relegated to the dustbins of history. Is there any way to get it removed from songfight and sfjukebox? I'd just like to pretend the song never happened.

Thanks.

This is covered by the FAQ:
By submitting your song, you are authorizing us to post it permanently on a publicly viewable Web site where it can be downloaded by anyone.
Removing a song is difficult on the site's end (and wouldn't affect sfjukebox directly), and is like trying to extract urine from a pool in any case, especially since a lot of us have complete mirrors of the archives. It's better to just make a lot more, better music that people want to link to. Own your mistakes.

Or change your band name. It worked for me.

Also, it's possible that your SF archive is only coming up on top for you in Google. When I search 'obese chess' on my search engine of choice, your soundcloud page comes up first. Google's ranking algorithm is a bit overly-personalized these days and tends to reinforce results that are just like the ones you went to in the past (which is why I don't use Google anymore).

Plus, your "The Only French I Know" wasn't really all that bad. Were it not for this thread I'd have never tried listening to it in the first place. Hello, Streisand effect.

Ah dang, I figured it'd be in the FAQ and just missed it.

OH WELL.

Thanks!

Isn't THIS the FAQ? http://songfight.org/faq.html#copyright

Anyway, I'm the SF Jukebox admin, and it's technically possible for me to just delete your song from the database. That'll cost you $5.

Just kidding. I can really do it if you want. The Jukebox's data is based on Song Fight's data though. So if I ever for some reason have to re-import the data for that fight, your song would come back to life in the Jukebox. It's unlikely, but it could happen. I might be more inclined to just break the mp3 URL for your file, or you could give me a URL to use instead of the one to the mp3.

fluffy is right about the search results, too. When I open an "incognito" window in Chrome and Google for "obese chess" (without the double quotes) I only see the Jukebox on the first page, as the 9th result. Twitter, SoundCloud, and YouTube are the top three for me.

Awesome, there's two slightly-different FAQs! I see the .html version is linked from the front page. I wonder where the .php came from and if it's linked to anywhere. The .php version hasn't been edited since 2011 though, so I'm just going to redirect it to .html.

To be fair, it's not in an obvious section for the particular question being asked.
