The optional challenge is ephemeral

Post by Chumpy »

A fight's optional challenge is not listed in the fight archive, or on the 'front page' once the songs are posted. This means that casual listeners, or folks listening to old fights will not know about it. This is obviously not a show-stopper, but it would be nice to preserve this fight metadata.

Yeah, that is on the fightmaster radar. I started saving them in the Jukebox's database at some point. I haven't updated the fight page on the Jukebox to display them yet though, for some reason. It's too bad that they generally have been lost, along with the details about the votes, which also aren't saved on songfight.org once a fight is over (only the vote totals per artist are saved).

I added displaying the optional challenge on the Jukebox fight page, when the data is available

Very cool. The jukebox is awesome, I gotta remember to use it more often. GEO-IP details on the votes would be super interesting to look at, I didn't even think about people accessing SF from mobile networks.

We could do some interesting historical reports about the voting data if we save up enough of it. When I started doing the site updates, I started saving all the votes data on my laptop. I'm working on loading all that up into the Jukebox database soon and going forward.

I'm having a slow day at work so I did a search for "optional challenge" in the "Fight Discussion and Review" area of the boards and scraped out every optional challenge I found in there. I may have time to load those into the Jukebox database tonight.

There's of course a bunch that'll be missing thanks to them predating the new boards, and not all of the board posts include the optional challenge either. SO let's try to remember some others:

New Planet - this one had a really long ramble about basically "don't use traditional instruments" which was pretty funny, maybe archive.org has it
Been To China - emphasize a mistake
We Were Not Meant To Be - dinosaur comics
What We Need More Of Is Science - achewood
Sincerity Machine - cat and girl
the second time around for Zero 2 Phantom and A B C D Puppies - 64kbps mono
Sugar Shaker - make the dance hit of the summer

Those are the ones I remember off the top of my head.

I wish I could remember how the actual challenge was phrased for New Planet. It was something like "Don't use any traditional instruments. That's right, put away your guitar and piano. Say goodbye to the glockenspiel. Make some noise with something you found in the garbage."

Only I remember it being way funnier than that. (But it definitely mentioned glockenspiel and garbage.)

Anyway that's why so many songs used things like gargling and metronomes and hair dryers and whatever.

Lunkhead: Nice, and thanks for all your hard work! The Jukebox is super cool and I've been having a lot of fun messing around with it. I did notice a couple of broken windows though, and I have a feature suggestion.
  • * List creation seems broken. When I try to save a list it dies with a stack trace, same goes when you try to delete an entry from a list you're working on.
    * It would be an awesome feature if you could generate a list based on your search results.

Huh, I did not know playlist creation was broken. I will investigate.

List creation from search results is a great idea. I will put that on my TODO list. Thanks for the suggestion!

There was an optional challenge for "Happy Machine Ankle," but it was weird. It was a link to a piece of fiction, I think, and it only even showed up on site when the fight was already halfway over, IIRC. Does anyone else remember that?

Also, "Too Goth to Rock" had one: "Incorporate a key change."

Yes, I think happy Machine Ankle was a title inspired by a movie that needed a theme song or something like that. I think JB and/or Spud set it up, so maybe one of them will remember the details. It was a Sci-Fi story if I remember correctly. The ticking alarm clock in my song was related to it in some way.

You might be mixing up two things that coincidentally involved the same fight.

I remember there was someone who had been inspired by the "Happy Machine Ankle" fight and incorporated the title into their movie script where mysterious radio chatter was called for. They were excited about it and posted the movie trailer on the forum when it was available, but the actual "Happy Machine Ankle" line was cut from the film, so that was anticlimactic. I don't think any Song Fight music (from that fight or otherwise) was ever even considered for use in the movie. And I also don't think that the fightmasters were aware of the movie when they set the title and challenge.

It could be that I'm the one mixing this up, but in my memory, the movie was unrelated to the challenge.

You may have it already but I do remember 'Welcome To _______''s optional challenge was 'Fill in the blank' (or some such wording). I'll add any others that spring to mind ...

Another one just came to mind, though I don't remember the exact verbiage or even which week this was...

Once there was a sequence of progression titles (from July 9th through July 30th, 2004). One week, it was "Under the Horse," the next was "Under the Wagon," and the third was "In the Ditch." This was during the three-title era, so there were two other titles accompanying each of these, and there was no specification which of the titles this optional challenge was supposed to apply to, the optional challenge was something like "sequel song." Or something to imply that it should be a continuation of the previous song.

So I'm guessing the specific week of this challenge was the last of these three, from July 23rd through July 30th, 2004. The titles were "Hands Up," "Baba Ganoush," and "In the Ditch."

Does anyone else remember the exact wording?
