Guy to ban

Post by Reist »

There's some pretty sick stuff in the help/how to section. Can you ban that guy? I'd like to feel okay browsing SF at home, but right now I can't do that.

Thanks!

Reist, just so you know, it's not a guy, it's a 'bot. I delete these posts and threads whenever I see them, plus I delete the bot's account and disallow the login name used. I haven't started banning IP addresses yet, mostly because I don't know if it would do any good. Once a day, I delete the accounts of bots who have signed up but not posted anything, and similarly make their user names illegal. I spend a good ten minutes a day on these task, and I don't see it getting better any time soon.

Is there any way to get PHPBB to have a two step registration process, ie one where you fill out the registration form, then receive a code by e-mail that you have to enter to be able to log in for the first time? (I'm assuming that's now how it's already working, though I don't know since I haven't registered in a long time.) That could potentially cut down on the number of bots who register.

I'd rather have Akismet for PHPBB, but ces la vie.

I delete porns and spams as soon as I see them. There's one or two per day it seems, at least, that's how many I delete.

If Spud's also deleting them, maybe there's more than that. I just kill the thread though, I don't go in and delete the user-- there's a tool I've installed that will let me cull "zero post" users all at once. Did that a month or two ago. Thousands of them. It's hard to believe how little forum software cares about security or content control.

Ah well. Fight the good fight.

Keep up the good work guys.

ps - I'm not sure if this will be any help, but I think I might have killed all the spammers at radnoise with the help of easymod and Anti-Spam ACP (Created By: EXreaction). I used to get like 5 spam guys a day, but now I get none. I haven't had a bot sign up for months now. However, they're trying. I've got a spam log which shows spammers who tried to sign up, and it's 64 pages long.

Do you already use Anti-Spam ACP here?
