Yep, that's exactly what I was looking for. Why is that bad? And why is it (cheating)?

Exactly. I go to the home page to get the tracks once (via down-them-all) and ... that's it. SF life is on the boards, including the new song title. Am I missing the raffle or something?

Me too. I usually find out about the new title when I notice the pre-fight thread.

it really needs to be auto-twittered, so it can go to your phone while you're away from the computer.

"Auto-twittered" isn't really a word, is it?

It is cheating because it deprives you of the joy of going to the actual songfight website, and it deprives us of you as an audience. You are not tempted to read the song news, nor to notice who might be in the fight that you didn't see before, or who won the fight five years ago. In short, it further minimizes your actual contact with the songfight community and marginalizes you as a participant.

Gee, I never looked at it that way. BECAUSE IT'S RIDICULOUS. Come on Spud, that's like saying if I never visit the Amazon home page, I'm not going to continue to spend all my money on the site. If "Song News" hasn't hooked me by now, I'm pretty sure it's not going to. (Really? Rone has a new album out!)

The "songfight community" is on the boards, not the homepage. I disagree with you 100% and bet that this added access will probably make me more likely to look at the front page than less.

I dunno, Spud, I get where you're coming from and all, but I also feel like Frankie, for all his vitriol, might be right here. The people who would use this Google Calendar feature are the ones who are already entrenched enough in the community that you don't need to worry about us. The ones you actually want to see the homepage are the new visitors, people who have maybe participated once or twice, or maybe not at all yet.

After all, how many of us get to the boards by using a bookmark, bypassing songfight.org altogether? Is this detrimental to the community?

I was trying to be funny, but I guess I failed. I'm not at all insulted, although I will say the use of the word "cheating" seems ill-chosen in a discussion involving a songwriting competition. Does having the title automatically sent to my Google Calendar really give me an advantage over the other competitors? Is it cheating if I ask my friend to e-mail the title when it goes up? Is it cheating to write the title on a sticky note and put it on my computer? Because that's basically all I'm looking for here: a way to think about the title on a daily basis (which I would think would be encouraged by the site-owners, not discouraged). The fact that I know what the title is right now is proof that it works. I would surely have forgotten it by now, but it's right there on my mac, which I think is a good thing.

Nah, I will. I just haven't gotten around to it. It is silly to not have one since it serves as a reminder to look at the site.

Okay, I was originally just going to do this as an alternate format on the 'cal' thing but I decided it would be nice to also include last week's winners, the song news, etc. but that will take a while for me to get to. In the meantime, the next title is in a feed at http://songfight.org/rss.php

Hey fluff, the Google Calendar didn't update. Not complaining, just checking.

EDIT (9:30 EDT): And now it is updated, so if you aren't even awake yet, it worked perfectly!

Yeah, there's a bit of lag. Google only checks external feeds occasionally (a good thing!), and I have no idea how often that is.
