The Brothers Grimm

So, I like to think I'm a big Terry Gilliam fan. I haven't seen the new movie yet, though. I imagine the SongFight! community undoubtedly contains many other TG fans. So have you seen it? And if so, what do you think? I'm wondering if I should see this at night and pay full price or if it's only worth a matinee.[/u]

I haven't seen it, but I've heard that this movie isn't particularly good... like, you can tell which parts Gilliam loved and which parts were shoehorned in due to studio pressure, and it ends up being way too inconsistent to be enjoyable.

So I'm waiting for it to come out as a rental or a dollar movie or similar.

My brother walked out of it and into "Four Brothers". Apparently "Four Brothers" was good as at least it had explosions.

This is what everyone is saying. Not that I don't beleive you, but what exactly makes it horrible? Compare and contrast it against another Terry Gilliam film, if you are able.

I'm a big Gilliam fan, and this was hands-down the worst movie I've seen all year. Ugh. As much as I want to exonerate Gilliam, it seems that he is half to blame for this movie's problems. Some will point to the screenplay and the plot which he was not responsible for (don't get me wrong: these are horrible) but the worst parts of the movie are the uneven visuals and the scene-chewing campy performances, both of which are almost certainly Gilliam's doing.

Go watch Brazil instead.

see Puce's comments. I will also add that the special effects (with a few notable exceptions) are really bad. Every accent in the film is inconsistent and/or over the top and/or just plain poor. We hated it almost from the moment it started until it was over. In fact, I had completely forgotten it was a Terry Gilliam film until the closing credits; this could have been directed by anyone. It had none of the darkness or cleverness or fantasy of a typical Gilliam film.

It's a huge mess, without any of the usual Gilliam-goodness. You can really tell that he suspended production and started up again. It's so choppy and uneven, and the humor is awful. Actually, the script overall is terrible.

Critical perspective, please. There is clearly no film worse than Batman and Robin. Unless there are witches with three bat-nipples in it. and Chris O'Donnell's flannelled ass.

OK, finally saw this the other day on DVD with Erin, and yes, it sucked. All the above points proved to be true. I found the terrible fake accents particularly offputting. The script and casting were so bad. Heath Ledger is really mush-mouthed, and it's annoying in this movie. There were moments where I thought "Hey, this movie looks a little like a Terry Gilliam movie!" but not many. I thought a lot of the CG effects looked crappy, too. Aargh. Now I have to track down a copy of Tideland, which Gilliam apparently did while on break from Bros. Grimm. I'd never heard of it till I checked his IMDB page today. Anybody seen it?

Hate to say it, but reviews I have seen are equally disparaging ... a mess, seems to be the overall impression.
