My Films of Last Year

Post by j$ »

A short list and late, but I liked these movies the mostest last year -

Guardians of the Galaxy
What We Do in the Shadows
Frank

There were no others to make it onto this list. As I am now gearing back into movie going / downloading - recommend me some stuff I must of missed, please!

I enjoyed Birdman a lot. The only other best picture nominee I saw was The Grand Budapest Hotel, which I also really enjoyed, although not as much as a few other Wes Anderson movies I can think of. I thought Interstellar was pretty enjoyable too but definitely one where the central contrivances did not hold up under any scrutiny for me.

I guess I mostly just saw "popcorn fare" type movies other than that. Entertaining stuff not really saying much, e.g. The LEGO Movie, X-Men, Captain America 2, etc. etc. I loved GotG.

I really wanted to see Frank but haven't yet, heard it was amazing. I didn't see Gone Girl but I like David Fincher and I saw a spoiler ridden "Honest Trailer" that makes it seem insanely messed up in a way that I'm morbidly curious about. Ben Affleck and the apparent ending seem rather unsatisfying though. I also wanted to see Lucy, though I heard it was terrible, and Under the Skin, which got mixed reviews. Lots of stuff added to me "to watch" list but not much progress watching them.

I liked Days of Future Past, Lego movie & Winter Soldier (in that order, from bottom to top). Lucy was a perfectly good disappointment, because it kept promising to be more than it was, but didn't ever get there. I really need to see "Under the Skin" - it sounded dull but everyone I know who has seen it keeps waxing lyrical about it. Birdman was fun, with great performances having fun, but TBH it was another "It's so hard to be an *ACTOR*" movie, which is kinda dull unless you are one, I guess. I also need to see "GBH" although it's a bit "wacky" for my tastes, I presume!

More, please!

I didn't see a lot of new movies last year, but Interstellar was okay (although could have done without the middle third), Big Hero 6 was wonderful, and I enjoyed The Lego Movie.

Oh, and Boyhood was pretty okay until it stopped being about all the drama in the main character's life and started being about the main character. Oh you poor tortured artist, waaaaahhhh.

Yeah, the Lego movie was a lot of fun but the [SPOILERZ?] Dad discovers the joy of being a kid again ending was a bit pat, tbh. Worked in context though.

I am resisting Boyhood for no real reason - the social experiment part sounds interesting, I like Linklater (well Dazed & Confused is one of my favourite films ever, the rest is a little hit and miss). I think my no.1 rule of going to the cinema (as opposed to waiting for it 'on demand') is "Does it feature spaceships and lazerguns?" "Does it have gay sex in it?" "No on both counts? I'm already in the pub".

I only even got around to watching Lego Movie because it was on HBO, and I was visiting my parents and my dad and I were both pretending not to be interested in watching it so we saw it together and enjoyed it.
