If Mkilly wants to run with this, I think that's awesome. If cost-covering contributions are necessary, I'll certainly do my part.

Well, thanks to a great deal on web hosting I've (finally) got a solution that will let ya'll get the video, although it's not fancy DVDs.

I've uploaded the "documentary" I made using (mostly) Glenn's footage. It's about 30 minutes and can be downloaded here:

<a href="http://www.malachiconstant.com/Songfigh ... -lores.mov (322 Meg, Quicktime, Sorenson codec)</a>

This video has the best footage from the (TEN!) VHS tapes Glenn sent me as well as a sprinkling of stuff I shot. You can see Spud tell his story of how he became a pirate, Glenn's wife rapping in a Wal-Mart, and all the drunken after-party shenanigans at Futureboy and Moboid's house.

Now, I can also host the hi-res/full-quality versions, but they are huge. 30 minutes of footage is over 6 GB. I'd like to know if there is an interest in downloading such gigantic files. If anyone wants them I'll be happy to host them, but keep in mind that each band's hi-res performance will take me about two days to upload over my (borrowed) internet connection. And I can't host them all at once.

So if anyone is interested in the full-res versions let me know, even if you just want your band's performance and not all of them. Any band that performed that weekend will definately get the full-res version if they want it, but I don't want to tie up a computer for two days if no one is going to download the file.

As for the low res versions, I will upload all of them, so everyone who wants them can see them (they will be around the 300-600 Meg range). I have to copy them off the backup DVDs and reencode them so it won't be instantanious, but I can easily do one performance a day at least so the wait won't be long.

I'm using this first "documentary" to judge how much bandwidth will be eaten up with these files before I go crazy with the uploading, but I don't expect that to be a problem with the low res files. So please, download away and tell me your thoughts.

P.S. I know that it is ridiculous that it's taken me so long to get this video to ya'll. I've made my laziness excuse often enough, but I also honestly expected to be in a better financial position by this point. All I can say is I'm sorry. Even though it's incredibly late I'm glad everyone will be able to see the video at last.

P.P.S. If anyone wants to get all the hi-res versions and distribute a DVD (for cost and modest compensation for your time and effort) I'll be more than happy to comply. I still have Bortwein's DVD menus and all that stuff, assuming he's okay with that.

well, cool..thanks for all the effort. I know what it takes to produce video in spare time while actually working and living life. Don't beat yourself up too hard. IT's FREE AFTER ALL! Thanks for the effort you have put into it for us.

Who still uses Sorenson? I ask because:

Have you considered MPEG-4? It runs at about a gig an hour and still looks pretty much fantastic. And the encoder license for it is damn cheap at only $30 (via Quicktime 7 Pro, which is also very easy to find serial numbers for).

I mean, it's cool that you've gotten something produced and available for download, but that can't be good for your hosting (unless you have a huge, free pipe).

Ooh, great movie! Nice work editing. I'm glad that y'all got footage of Poncho With Little Hat because I can't get enough of that. Fluffy with a beer in each hand was pretty funny too.

The jump from before-the-show directly to after-the-show was a little jarring; too bad y'all couldn't fit a little bit of the actual concert in there.

<a href="http://www.malachiconstant.com/09%20Dr.%20Worm.mov">Dr. Worm is up. (340Megs)</a>

I'm doing these in no particular order, just whatever is at the top of the DVD stack. If any artist has a request let me know.

Also, for your convienence you can also go to <a href="http://www.malachiconstant.com/songfigh ... ht.html</a> and see the running list of what I've uploaded if you don't want to have to keep checking this thread.

The only thing that would have made the documentary better would have been less of me. I know I was getting sick of listening to my own voice, and I can only imagine what others think.

It's funny... I HAVE all of this footage, and I totally forgot about (and loved) Hoblit's "Is Spud around?" moment, and Dr. Worm's "You can camera me all you want!" snippit. Worm seems to be particularly hilarious whenever a camera is present.

I wish Spud's story of becoming a pirate had turned out clearer, but it does not blend well with the other conversations that were going on. Still nice to have on camera.

Hopefully my incessant filming paid off by being fun to watch in spots. I cracked a smile more than a few times during the footage.

Thank you for using "Take a pill" as the closing song, Malachi. That was very cool.

I would particularly like to see your footage of Ken's set, Brother Machine's set, and JB's set in the not-too-distant future. Thanks for putting this together. I know it's later than you had hoped, and not necessarily in the way that you had hoped, but it really is a task of epic proportions. The pack-rat in me would like to somehow get all of the hi-res versions of everyone's sets at some point, but there is surely no rush.

This is getting me pumped up for Songfight Live '06, and I am REALLY hoping that Rachael and I will be there this time. If we DO show up, I will probably take more stupid footage... maybe not as MUCH footage....

ROCK!

I thought "Take a Pill" went well at the end, and besides I really like that song.

I know Spud's story was kind of hard to make out, but I thought it should be included anyway, I'd never heard it before.

I'll do the next three in the order you asked for.

Oh, and I didn't think your voice was annoying at all, you were good at keeping things moving and getting interesting responses from people.

Brother Machine's set is uploading now. I've got a shoot to go on, but it should be done in about an hour and a half, or about 7:30 Central time.

I'm having some problems with Ken's disc, so I'll have to work on it a bit before I can upload it. So it'll be either him or JB that gets uploaded next.

When Bro Mac's video is done uploading you can get it here:

<a href="http://www.malachiconstant.com/17%20Bro ... ant.com/17 Brother Machine.mov</a>

or just go to <a href="http://www.malachiconstant.com/songfigh ... ht.html</a> to see a list of all available sets.

Sorry, Glenn, Ken's Super-hyper-band'n'stuff is going to take a bit longer.

<a href="http://www.malachiconstant.com/16%20Hig ... v">Instead I present High Density!</a> Hosts extraordinaire, and all around great performers.

Download the video. Hear the music. See the legend.

I am with Hoblit on this, each new set is like another gift. The footage turned out quite nice. I love how you sometimes went between your footage and mine. Thanks for all the hard work, Malachi!

I am dreading my set because I know it was kind of a disaster, but I AM looking forward to seeing a different camera angle at the look on Erik's face as we launch into "Hotel" with very little warning.

I also look forward to seeing the # footage, and Frankie's set, all of the Please the Pig footage too!

Oh... and Hoblit's set.... which I missed... while practicing for Erik's set. Sorry, Hoblit :(

Who am I kidding?! I just want to see it all! Keep 'em coming!

ROCK!

As you all know, I've never been to one of these, but watching all of this footage is defintely getting me interested in going to one someday. Malachi, I know it's taken a while for you to get this together but it's been worth the wait for me. I have kept checking this thread since it began, so it's nice to see the work being completed now. A very good job indeed with all of it.

Glenn nice work on the interviews and Hoblit, I should have tried to get in contact with you while I was in Florida last week. We could have seen who could drink more.

Keep it coming Malachi, and thanks for your efforts. I appreciate it.

  New page, here's a quick refresher. If you want to see complete video footage of Songfight Live 2004, go to this page:

<a href="http://www.malachiconstant.com/songfight.html"> http://www.malachiconstant.com/songfight.html  </a>

I'm uploading sets right now. Eventually ALL sets will be uploaded at the rate of about one set a day. View them in your browser or right-click and "Save As...".

Thank, folks. I thought maybe I was talking to myself these past few days. It's good to know people are watching these. And screw the bandwidth, I have plenty to spare.
  • Bandwidth used: 15 GB
    Bandwidth provided: 1000 GB
Bandwidth grows: 8 GB (per week)

Joke's on you, sucker!

<a href="http://www.malachiconstant.com/11%20Gle ... mov">Gleen Kase is now available.</a> Drunken, surprise bass player 15-16 Puzzle provided at no extra charge.

Glenn's set rocked (and hip-hopped, too). And for all he's done for SF please, please, buy him a drink if you ever meet him.

P.S. If you've been going to http://www.malachiconstant.com to see the list of sets the URL has changed. Go to
<br><a href="http://www.malachiconstant.com/songfight.html"> http://www.malachiconstant.com/songfight.html  </a><br>
for all future updates. I plan to keep this a permanant page as long as I can, or until Glenn becomes an Internet superstar and overwhelms my bandwidth, whichever comes first.

P.P.S.
Re: Glenn's "I love how you sometimes went between your footage and mine."

Most of the time I switched between sets because your camera was running and mine wasn't (I had to conserve tape). Except for day 2, when I was using MiniDV instead of BetaSP. I had plenty of MiniDV tapes. I also used it to cover when I had to change tapes, and sometimes when your shot captured an unexpected event (i.e. several songfighters jumping on stage to join a set in progress.)

Without Glenn's footage you wouldn't have the "documentary" and the concert footage would have a lot of blank spaces.

For those who love wacky production screw-ups be on the look out for a scene where neither Glenn nor my cameras were running. I had to improvise some footage. It may have been in High Density's set. I don't really remember. (On second thought it might be Octothorpe or Please the Pig, I don't remember. Stay tuned!)

Anyway, back to encoding and uploading!

The ones I have watched so far are awesome. Brother Machine rocks out, and at the beginning of his video, MC Ponch looks like some specteral ghost thing. Awesome. Can't wait for Glenn's set to download.
