Happy Birthday Phil! It's definitely an honor being asked to contribute to this. I hope you and the rest of the rockingest family on SF stick around forever.

After I reviewed "Couldn't Have Been Worse" as "not one of your best songs," I changed my mind. "Couldn't Have Been Worse" is totally one of the best Hell Yeahs's songs. I wanted to make it weird-electro, but the song rocks so much, I couldn't not try to rock on my own. It's not as good as the original, but I hope you enjoy it.

My other favorite Hell Yeahs's songs, since you asked in the review thread:

Happy Birthday Phil. I haven't had much time to get to know you and Heather yet, but your music certainly stands on it's own here at SF, so I was honored to cover one of your songs. After listening to a couple dozen of your songs, "Take A Pill" caught my ear sight immediately, for I too am a huge 24 fan. :P

Happy Birthday! I too am honored to be part of this.

Neat to listen to a bunch of your Abominominous stuff, since most of that was in the can before I joined the site.

I really enjoyed covering your "Spalding Gray" song - getting to know it was a real journey for me and I really liked getting to know what you were thinking that week in 2004 (assuming the song represents your actual thoughts that week). What a great gift to the world Spalding Gray was, and what a loss to us all the way he went.

But this isn't about him, it's about you and about how your song speaks to his dignity!

Peace,

Ross

Happy Birthday Phil!!

I was really honored to get to cover Lucky Man as it's in my all-time top 5 favorite SF songs, and actually I like it so much that I completely froze up. At one point I gave up entirely because I just felt it was impossible to do it justice. I'm glad I stuck with it. What fun!

Happy birthday Phil, hope you like 'em!

I too am a 24 fan, so my choice of "Take a Pill" was obvious (BLT, you stole mine, ya big sleaze (just kidding)). Mr. Starfinger was nice enough to "help out" :)

Happy B-day, Phil. I was absolutely in love with the two originals, so I'm really glad I was able to get in on this, even if I didn't pace myself very well. The first mix I had linked up there was hella trebley, but I realize that's not very Phil Redmon so I remastered it to make it a little muddier. I ninja'd the new mp3 into place this evening, so it might be worth a re-download.

Really glad to see a lot of other Redmon fans representin', too.

WOW.

Cattle Bat and the Brian Fs cover "Put Cindy Back on the Bus" (original by Abominominous) - Wow, dude, the harmonic piles! Isn't this the third time you covered this song? Takes me back, man, to our first discovery of the SongsFight. That was, like, back when Empire came out! Way to go, keepin' it under your toque, dude. I'm glad you bought that bass!

King Arthur covers "Dinga Da Donga" (original by Abominominous) - This is so over-the-top awesome. "I'll be tickled pink by whatever you've got planned for when we get there" is SO PERFECT. I can't believe anyone would cover this song, and to just turn it on it's ear, I mean, this is such a quality cover. Perfect for the Macy's sales floor. Thanks for playing so much guitar! That was a gread lead break! YEAH!

Jack Shite covers "Beauty is a Burden" (original by The Hell Yeahs) - DUDE, did you kidnap the Mysterions? Velvet Underground / beatnik freak out, but like, without waking the neighbors...until FUCKED! So fun and with it. I need sunglasses and a headband and some dramatic zooming! A royal boogie down. Thanks, dude.

Jim of Seattle covers "Lucky Man" (original by Abominominous) - WOW! You must have done this from another dimension! I've never heard this side of you! Such a great build, really captures the high speed paranoia I was trying to evoke on the orig. It's got a nice dollop of sleaze that really makes the background barbershoppers shine with the contrast. Thanks a ton, Jim!

Caravan Ray & Flvxxm Flvorvm cover "Outside Paradise" (original by The Hell Yeahs) - Still unheard! That link doesn't work for me! I'll keep checking for all eternia!

Ross Durand covers "Spalding Gray is Missing" (original by Abominominous) - Well, you got it right on the head, dude. I really loved that dude, and I had pretty much just started to get into the SongsFight swing when that title popped up. It bummed me out, and I knew that the line about "songwriting competition" was totally lame but i thought it was appropriate for the title. The lyrical revision just about made me cry. Couldn't be more right on, dude.

The Hip Cola covers "Romantic Cheapskate" (original by Abominominous) - Ha ha, yes, that is exactly the type of song this is! Way to tug the heartstrings, leaving it hanging at the end! Too cruel! When John Hughes finally realizes I am a big deal, this is the version he is gonna use. Ireally, really like the "one condition, yeah." Again, I am just so, so glad that people, like, "get" me. High five, man.

Brainpipe covers "Take a Pill" (original by Abominominous) - Yeah! Hott Ike WIllis delivrum! Mos' defamully roun' bridgely way! Thanks a million for smoothing over my lyrical mis-step on Michelle's name. I felt like such a boner! This sounds like a robot wasps nest! It's totally East Side Cybertron! I love it!

c hack covers "Couldn't Have Been Worse" (original by The Hell Yeahs) - Man Jovi, I don't think there's been any Hell Yeahs played on an acoustic, except for, actually, the original of this jam! It was tucked away in there. Man, the "punchin out the drywall" bits sound like you're keeping them secret! A cool take on one of my fave HY tunes. THANK YOU for not changing it to "You wanna be my dude?" Spooky bg lady, too!

Steve Durand covers "Gone Phishing" (original by Abominominous) - MWOW! I can't even believe I had anything to do with this. This was a real "pinch me, I'm dreaming" moment in the playlist. So much brass, it's fascinating and awesome. A great twist on the delivery, and man, those descending harmonies sound especially sinister coming outta your pipes (especially with the holla back " a bite, dada!" horns that sound so much liike allison.) Really great, man, thanks for putting so much MUSIC in there! AMAZE!

Hoblit covers "Brown Boxes" (original by Abominominous) - You know what this is? Sweaty & Muscular. I am so jealous of your "movin' gets me nowhere." I've never been able to sing like a rock and roll guy. That "Vanish" is brutal too. Great feedback bleeeps at the knockout, too! Dude, the original was Mer-Man. This is fuckin' Beast-Man.

Billy's Little Trip covers "Take a Pill" (original by Abominominous) - I never imagined this song would rock, man. But wow, it rocks so fine. I loveity love love that descending melody on "re-LE-e-eased." I would nominate this for a driving game, or maybe a skateboarding game, or, like, one of those murder simulators. This has the prefect dose of bitter spit & bile. You win a trophy for your "fuckin jerk". THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Primitive Screwheads cover "The Pawnbrokers Stepdaughter" (original by Abominominous) Man, you get points for hanging in there as long as you did! Ha ha ha! So great! I haven't thought about these lyrics in a long time (man, I just realized the effect james brown's death has on the orig!) and it was so funny hearing them out of their element (my mouth.) Fun and efficient! Thanks for picking this one! I was so nervous when I sent it in. I didn't think it'd get posted at all, even JB wrote me all "wtf, 14 megs?" It's nice to revisit the new years eve madness!

Puce covers a medley of "So Kind Stacey" by The Hell Yeahs and "Onomatopoeia" by Abominominous - I didn't want to play favorites. But, puce, seriously, this song knocked me out of my chair. I was on the floor, tingling. This is so many of my favorite sounds rolled into one thing. It's like, like, everything I like about Of Montreal spread over a layer of Queens of the stone age! This is for sure, one of the best things ever to land in my ears. I know thousands of songs, front to back, and his floored my ass. I have never been excited by a song to this extent. It is warm ribbon candy in my ears. Thank you for considering my low-end fetish on the remix! That was super thoughtful, but, dude, man, first prize, and so on. On my second listen, I said to Heather, seriously, I said "I should get a lawyer. Just in case."
Totally, totally, fucking awesome. So many nuggets of joy. the la las the woo woos, the filter sweep, the bangs, and the end of EVERY LINE. That, that, I don't know what to call it, that smug-yet-pleading vibrato, the "mean" squeaks, I'm just knocked the fuck out, dude. It's so perfect, I'm gonna have nightmares! of JOY! THANK YOU!!!!!

Santa's Little Helper covers "Lucky Man" (original by Abominominous) - Thank you Santa. You don't even know, dude. I really needed this, like, now more than ever. Walking on cloud nine, to the max.
I love that you covered that insane end bit to this song. That's, like, when they handle the snakes. Great job sequencing, too, Santa. This is the prefect finale to a hell of a roller coaster ride. Though..... you sound really similar to another guy I know aroun' here! Seriously, the revival of this tune at the end is a great summing-up of the hxaro message, man.

I'm super stoked.
I really like being, um, understood.

I guess I should hang out with the SongsFight again, huh.

YOU GUYS ARE SO COOL.

You're welcome, Phil! I tried 3 different treatments for Romantic Cheapskate, superheavy, electroniclash, and this one...oh, and I started out doing it identical note for note...to figure it out. Unforch..it left not enough time to embellish and flesh out everything in my mind...but it was awesome fun to interpret your work that way.

Btw, these are all sooooo very good. Way to go folks!

Damn, Steve Durand, that's funky. That sounded like it should be the theme song for a private dick who's a sex machine to all the chicks.
