The 6th Annual Gift of Music
'Tis the season for our yearly version of Secret Santa, it's:
2008/2009 GIFT OF MUSIC
Here's the concept:
Anyone who wants to be a part of this cover challenge simply needs to post here, telling me that they're in and listing 4 songs (links to the songs are appreciated). These 4 songs are 4 songs that you really like and would like to hear covered. Once the list of participants is compiled, the names will be tossed into a hat and paired off.
From there, each participant will get a private message telling them who they'll be giving the gift of music to as well as the 4 songs that person chose. The participant picks 1 song from the 4 and covers the song. Then on the due date, we post the results and everybody wins.
It's Secret Santa meets Coverfight meets Hxaro with incredible results. The previous GoMs have been exceptional. Check them out on Eddiebangs' website Soul Tree Records:

Re: The 6th Annual Gift of Music
It's GoM time ALREADY? Good gravy, where does the time go? Anyway, I will most assuredly be in. Songs to come.
This year I'd like to see an effort to unearth the older GoM entries. A lot of the links from the '03 and '04 pages don't work anymore, so I'd like to see updated ones. For example, I'm dying to hear Glenn's Megadeth cover and Starfinger's Billy Joel cover from the '03 GoM.

I'm in, I suppose, with the same four songs I picked last year. I'll look them up later but for now I'm drunk and tired.

Re: The 6th Annual Gift of Music
I hereby offer to organize the "help the stiffed" committee.
I had a great time recording the tune I did last year, but it was a little disappointing to be waiting to see who would cover one of the songs I asked for and never get one. I know that Jack and some others took the time to do a few covers for some of the stiffed and I thought that was really cool, it is what inspired this idea for me.
Therefore - I am offering to organize a group of fighters who will take the responsibility to record something for each artists stiffed in the GOM exchange this year (assuming that some get stuffed - it would be awesome if none did). Assuredly there would be a reasonable grace period for those who are merely a little late, but once things shake out, I'd like to organize a group to make sure each individual gets a song. Niveous already does tons just to make this happen, so this is meant merely as support. I figure that those stiffed are the ones who covered a song for someone else but did not have anyone cover one of theirs.
So - drop me a PM if you'd like to be part of the team to help the stiffed. Then we'll lie in wait till January or so and see how we can help - it would be great if it wasn't necessary - but we'll see what happens

Re: The 6th Annual Gift of Music
The links are dead? Hmm... I've got folders for 04-07 here (but not evidently 03). Oh, I see, I think I deleted the ones I didn't like from '03 and stuck the ones I did like in a collection folder.Albatross wrote: This year I'd like to see an effort to unearth the older GoM entries. Anyway, I have many of the files... Is this a King Arthur job for the sidefights archive?
But just for you: State of Grace. I don't think he's happy about how it came out
I had been wondering when Niv was gonna announce this... I'm in! I have the idea to pick songs from my wedding.

Re: The 6th Annual Gift of Music
I'd prefer if my first two (three?) didn't re-emerge. Anything from 'Tainted Love' onwards is fine.
Oh yeah, i'm in again, please. This will be my fifth GoM (after boycotting one year for a reason that i only vaguely remember)

Re: The 6th Annual Gift of Music
Change in direction this year.
I have always very patriotically provided all Australian content for these things in the past. This year - it only makes sense to shift it all across 'the ditch', for an All Aotearoan GOM list:
I See Red - Split Enz
Down In Splendour - Straitjacket Fits
Not Given Lightly - Chris Knox
There Is No Depression In New Zealand - Blam Blam Blam
(will post mp3s later)
Blam Blam Blam video is a bit crap - but there is a cool shot at about 2:18 of Mt Taranaki. That is what I go out of my house and see every morning (well, on the rare mornings when it isn't raining anyway)

OK, here we go. One of these is a holdover from last year's list, which went unfulfilled:

"Dog Police" - Dog Police ( mp3 | lyrics | YouTube )
"The Frogs" - Wesley Willis Fiasco ( mp3 | lyrics | live YouTube )
"Teenage Enema Nurses In Bondage" - Killer Pussy ( mp3 | lyrics )
